Sometimes we do things we know that we shouldn't. Some times you don't have the right tools and sometimes you are just lazy. I'll start off with two pictures of our "reverse press" that just happened last week. Tell us if you have any similar pictures/stories.

Yeah, It was actually just a light press. But we had no other way to pull on it.

O man, I don't even know where to begin we have done so many things we know we should not do.

Probably our biggest is/was our engine test stand for this year. it was basically a giant bucket of water with hoses going to and from the engine that were duck taped, next to a battery that we were using to jump the starter motor (by hand no less), sitting next to a fuel tank that was using old, cracked fuel lines and vented towards the battery.

we did always make sure to have a fire extinguisher around though http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I had one of those moments the other night where I turned to a freshman and told him "I don't want to ever catch you doing this."

Freshman was sanding down a part so that our suspension tube would fit over the connector snuggly. The part got warm when doing this and sleeved partway on perfectly, but he then let it cool on their part way and it was stuck. I could only think of one way to get it off. I am holding the connector in the water fountain with one hand and holding a heat gun an inch from the connector with the other. To add it it, I was balancing on one foot while using my knew to turn the fountain on.

What did the freshman do? Took a video of me doing this to send to his friends.

LOL, the water cooled torches in our 400 amp tig machine like to randomly start dribbling water while being used sometimes, I usually don't notice until it I feel it running down my arm.

Best,
Drew

Things you know you shouldn't be doing:

Posting the stupid things you do on this website so your school administration sees it and shuts your club down/ makes you get better insurance. Didn't we already learn that lesson from the "Roll Cage Testing" video that was up a few months back??? There is that 'L' word to worry about.

I've seen several of these moments. One can be seen on YouTube as 'Death of a Baja Car'. They finally got it jumping more flat this year... Another is one I really don't even want to mention but it involves a CNC mill that weighs a few tons and how we got it into our machine shop. We've done some scary things and everyone there to see the sight was amazed that everyone walked away.

Just don't mention to Matt that we have a rubbermaid container half full of gasoline and a lighter in the toolbox. A parking lot full of fire later, we had to extinguish it. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Story time!

I noticed a small fire in the parking lot with Wes hunched over it. I walked over to investigate.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“I just wanted to see if this gas was still flammable. It was sitting for a long time. It doesn’t even really smell like gas anymore,” he said, handing me the gas filled cup.

“You remember back in middle school when people used to play with fire,” I said, “and there was always that one kid that would take it way too far and almost catch the entire neighborhood on fire? Yea, I was that kid.”

For some reason, Wes’s response was, “You know there’s a whole bucket of gas left in there.” He pointed towards the Rubbermaid bucket full of fuel.

Five minutes later the entire parking lot was on fire. I had just lit the whole bucket, which promptly melted letting flaming gasoline pour out in all directions. I grabbed a cardboard box to smother the flames, but the box just caught on fire. Then, stomping on the cardboard box, my shoe caught fire. Wes picked up a fire extinguisher and took care of it. Before the fire was even completely out he yelled, “What was that! What the hell were you thinking?”

“Wes, I just told you… what did I tell you, what did I just tell you?”

Clearly, I think we can all agree that the fault lies with Rubbermaid.

yup... your strap thing looks like something we did... only we were using a 25 lb weight and a piece of threaded rod as a slide hammer and it was just tethered to the cage so it didnt move...

and i have tested old or mystery-blend (old mix of e-something or other) in an arizona can to see if it still burnt... it did

Welding while buzzed. It wasn't me, but I'm just saying....

Also, "borrowing" parts from another project (albeit disused) for "development"....we're going to give them back. Honest!

Making a barrel stove out of a random barrel found in the engineering building.

Helping the University out by disposing of a pallet in said barrel stove, in the shop driveway. You know, just to make sure it works...

Acquiring a bunch of non working propane grills, then using charcoal in them.

Making burgers and hotdogs on said grill while in line for the homecoming parade, then being told that we cant grill on our float. Then grilling covertly through the remainder of the parade.

Uhmmm...I'm giving it +10.

Tell him to google "face palm," per someone else here's sarcastic (and yet highly effective IMHO) recommendation.

I honestly get giddy when I see inane questions, since I can't wait to see everyone else's sarcastic replies. The smart a$$es here are really top notch, it's some good stuff. Yes, I know, I should really stop feeding the trolls. Perhaps one day I will get bored with it.
