Will you be allowing vehicles that comply with Formula SAE Electric or Formula Hybrid Electric class rules to compete this year? Thanks.

How will you handle registration? First come, first served?

Formula North

Yes Tobias. Just like last year, it will be on the basis of first come, first served.

What's the reason for the over two-fold increase in fees from Year 1 to Year 2? Same venue.

Hello Xeilos

Thank you for your question. We have two answers for that.

1. Three weeks before the 2012 event, we lost a major sponsor (Proposed amount of $15,000). We had to dial down the budget in this short amount of time and our team members covered for the losses. Unfortunately we can't do that again this year. It is just not possible.

2. The teams that did care to provide us with feedback after the event agreed on the fact that the fees were too low and that we could increase it a bit. We would like to make it very clear that teams' fees barely cover the costs of running a competition. However, this increase will help us deliver on the improvements we have proposed for 2013.

We hope that this answers your query. If you would like to know how we really did financially in 2012 and how we propose to make up for our losses at future events, please do check out our Post-Event Report on our website.

Formula North does understand that the two-fold spike in fees may perturb teams that were interested in participating at our 2013 event. But we hope that you will understand that the spike is fair and still, on a the same leveling field as other Formula Student competitions in the world.

Once again thank you for your query. Our team will be at the 2012 UofT Shootout event, in case you may want to speak with us in person. We look forward to your team's participation at Formula North 2013.

BTW:
$ 1030 CDN registration fee is among the lowest registration fees of all FS/FSAE events.

Thanks for the reply.

I agree with Tobias in that the competition fee is low. I could have expanded my query to include the questions if there were going to be improvements planned or if it was fiscal carry-over from 2012.

Thanks again.

Hello Folks!

Just a quick reminder that the online registration for Formula North 2013 takes place on October 15th! If you haven't pre-registered yet, we request that you do so soon at www.formulanorth.com (http://www.formulanorth.com). Our max team limit is set at 30 participating teams.

For those who didn't attend last year, here is what we offer:

1. We run the competition in the same format as a standard FS/FSAE event.

2. Indoor pits - Our paddock is situated in a hockey arena, with easy access for vehicles in and out of the building.

3. Close-by accommodations - Our venue is situated within the City of Barrie. The closest accommodation is a 5 minute drive away. The closest mall with access to tools, hardware materials and food is 2 minutes away.

4. Host teams program - For teams traveling from far distances, we offer you with the opportunity to team up with local teams who volunteer to host your team. By hosting, we mean the host team offers their shop space and testing space during the week between the end of the FSAE Michigan event and the first day of Formula North. Host teams may be able to offer discounts to their school's accommodations, free parking tickets etc. We found this program effective last year as teams learn from each other and build relationships that last more than a competition season. The Host Teams Program form will be up soon after October 15th.

5. Another chance to compete during the Formula Student season - You know you spent many sleepless nights to build that car that you are so proud of. Then why not take advantage of the situation to show it off at another event amongst your peers. Another event that is not only just a week away from FSAE Michigan, but enough time to fix any mishaps that may have happened at the first event (provided the mishap was feasible enough to fix). And another opportunity for your new members to learn how to prepare for a competition. Experience counts, the opportunity exists - it is up to you and your team to decide if you want to pursue it.

6. Highly regarded judges - Feedback from teams that attended showed that they were impressed by the quality of judges that attended the FN event in 2012. We plan on maintaining that quality, and further improve on communicating judges' feedback back to the teams.

7. Although we may not have the cheapest beer in the world, there is something that definitely needs to be said about Canadian hospitality. Not sure of what we are talking about? Then come over and experience it!

The list could go on, but we believe our most convincing points have been conveyed. We hope you will consider participating at Formula North 2013. Don’t forget to pre-register! It costs nothing!

P.S. Fun fact: At our 2012 event, 23 teams registered within the first 20 minutes. We had 27 register by the deadline. And just like last year, the registration time for each team will be displayed on the website. The competition begins on October 15th.

That was quite fast. Nice to see event is packed.
And eager to see how Baltic teams will place in the future! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

By the way, still pondering about stopping by. Chances are I'm in the neighbourhood at that time. On a road trip...

This just in!

Steel Panther will be playing a concert at The Machine Shop in Flint, MI the Tuesday before Formula North! It's no secret that lots of SAE CDS vehicles are built on Steel Panther and this could be the perfect chance to get a big FSAE group together for an awesome concert on the way to Barrie. It's also an awesome, intimate concert venue and Flint is only an hour from the Canadian border, right on I-69. Tickets go on sale Friday.

Why no updates!!?!

The NU team sent an email out to our list last night that they were tech'd and figured out some of the running problems they were having at MIS a few weeks back, but not much more about what the event was like, track surface, weather, organization, or any of that.

Congrats, also congrats to the winner in ETS. That was one hell of a car...I had fun trying to be a design judge and got some very interesting insight in the car and the people who designed it.

Congrats to the Formula North team also, from my stand point it looked like a really well run event overall, even with some expected speed bumps.

Those are some pretty strange skidpad results (http://formulanorth.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/FN2013-Skidpad-Results.pdf) .

Missouri got 61.446 points for their first place in this 50 point event.
Concordia got 35 points for a time that exceeded 125% of the fastest time. (looks like Tmax=2,25*Tmin was used instead)
