Does anyone know how a MoTeC (M48 using Data 5) sends out it's data? I am trying to decode the packets so I can write an algorithim for a display I am making to interface with it.
So far I can only find the baud. parity, stop bit etc info to get the data but when I logged some of it on my laptop, I can't work out from looking at the packets how it is coded.
Eg, does 1 packet identify what the next 3 packets contain? is the first 4 packets RPM value, next 3 battery voltage etc.

Have you tried asking motec?

I second that... call Motec, they will provide you with the information you need.
Just a quick FYI, when you plug the communications cable into your computer (ie connecting the Rx connection vs just Tx & 0v) the ECU changes the output being sent from the ECU from data set 5, to what is needed by the software to make changes in the ECU.
Also, remember serial data is sent in 0v and 5v signals, and RS232 is sent in +/- 10v signals.

The way I understood the serial output to work is that it will continue to pump out data until it gets a signal from motec software to go to configure mode. If you just plug it in and log any data coming in and don't send anything it would just log data as if it was going to a display. But I will try again with only the Rx pin pressent on the cable going to my laptop.
I have tried contacting motec but are yet to get a response.
