View Full Version : Pourable Hard Rubber

Hello,

I'm looking for rubber compound that I can pour into a mold that when dry is a hard rubber. I hope to pour this around a piece of metal in a mold, then when dry I will have a rubber "grip" on that metal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Long time lurker, not FSAE, but this is a specialized question. . . http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I experimented with Devcon Flexane, a two part poly material. Easy to work with, you add a third chemical to reduce its hardness from about 80 to as low as 40 or so. Kind of pricey.

It did not work for me as it took a "set" after a month or so. It hardens in an hour or so, but takes a week or so for the intial cure. Short term tests were all very good.

Are you needing this to make a part, or are you actually making grips for tools or driver controls? If you are just making grips, there are several products that you just paint on or dip the part into that forms a rubber coating on. Plasti-dip, tool-dip....I can't remember what it's called. Even if you are needing to make an actual part, I wonder if there are any additives you could put in the cheap plasti-dip to make it suit your needs a little better. Might be a lot cheaper than the good stuff.

I'm looking to pour rubber into a mold that has a certain shape. When I take it out of the mold it will have an "ergonomic" shape. Yes I hope to design special grips for the car.

some carved high density foam with shrink wrap/felt around it will make your life easier. You waste a lot of time in making a mould then if it is "not what you expected" then you're not going to remachine another one that might be off as well. Keep it "art and craft" simple.
