ok, so I have these 1/10th scale RC Cars... my remote makes use of what looks like some kind of diode and on the flywheel I have a little black sticker which flashes by the diode... to go up scale with this which diode will this be?... its a pretty simple method but it works... so it uses a counter conversion to relate to the number of turns it passes which will give you rpm...

actually it uses a infrared sensor and uses passing light that needs to be converted... where can I have a look at possibilities?

If you're looking for more of the same technology, the last generation of ball mice (and modern laser mice with scroll wheels) use a similar optical encoder wheel.
