How do you decide on the gear ratio for a steering rack? Anyone using any good racks?

To choose a steering rack gear ratio, decide how many degrees you want to be able to the steeling wheel from lock to lock. then back calculate from your steering geometry that you have.

The main things a rack has to do is work, and be the correct length.

For some info on rack ratios, see:

We are probably going to buy our steering rack from desertkarts.com

Has anyone else found other places to buy good steering racks for FSAE use?

And the forces that the steering rack and tie rods experience-how can they be calculated?

I have a book by miliken & miliken which is said to be the bible of race car design, and its very complicated!

Any words of advise on the maths side of it?

Overlooking camber thrust and tire self-aligning moment:

During braking, forces on steering rack will be related to the scrub radius. During cornering forces will be related to the mechanical and pneumatic trail.

It's all about moments about the steering axis.

Check out the Chassis Shop website. We have gotten our racks from them the past two years. A little expensive though if you ask me.
