we would like to use team business cards in all of our PR type stuff. does anyone have suggestions on inexpensive companies to produce cards and/or maybe a do-it-yourself kit ?? the layout, etc. is all done (currently in powerpoint or photoshop) we are just looking to print the 3 color, 1-sided design.

Vistaprint....they're free.....if you choose a simple design.
all you do is pay for shipping.

Never explored that option.
I just stuck with a simple and clean layout
that happened to have our school colors.

You're probably better off finding a local company to deal with, in my experience the price difference won't be significant but the turnaround time compared to Web printing can be advantageous.
You'll also save money by using Pantone-matched colors (easy to do in Photoshop) with spot color printing instead of full color.

For my ignorant team member, Pantone colors are used all over the world for mass printing, from simple pamphlet to cereal boxes. It's like AISI norms, but for printing!! An internship in graphical design in a large compagny taught me that.
