We have been manufacturing our own hubs and are now thinking of making our own tripod housings. What if any concern should we be looking into in regards to vibrations from these pieces not being perfectly balanced. By our calculations their highest rotational velocity will be approximately 1500 PRM. What type of experience have teams that have done this in the past had? If anyone has already received the specifications on the Taylor-Race tripod housings to match the FSAE joints they sell could you please post them or e-mail me.
Cheers

How un-balanced are we talking here? I think you would have a difficult time making a tripod that was out of tolerance enought to give vibration problems, and still serve its purpose as a "CV" joint...You'll probably have all kinds of other problems long before vibration becomes an issue (like joints falling out, bearing surfaces galling, etc http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ).
What kind of specs are you looking for? I built a set based off the Taylor joints two years ago, I'd be happy to tell you what I know...
On a related note, does anyone know what joints Colorado was using? TINY little tripods...GKN I believe...

Yeah I didnt think it would be a real big problem. It was brought up by a teamate so in the interest of safety I thought I would just ask. Especially considering that we plan on CnC'ing them on a machine that does a little better than a thousanth of an inch.
Anyway the specs that I am looking for are the ones for Taylor Race's housing with the following dimensions; OD 86mm, Bolt Circle 74mm. These would fit their tripod joints that have the 20x22mm spline. If that is the part that you have the info please send it to me; either numbers, CAD, or .prt. My e-mail is cememt.legs@unb.ca

Check your email...let me know if you need more info (I probably won't have any more useful answers...but I can make something up).
