I am the powertrain leader for mississippi state university and i was wondering where people that were running a 4 cyl turbo found their turbos. We previously ran a garrett gt1241 but i am looking for something just a little smaller. Thanks for your help.

Are you seeing issues running the gt1241?

I would not have thought you would have trouble running the GT1214 on a ~600cc 4 cylinder.
Maybe explain the problem a little more, see if we can help.

Well i have spoke to a guy from garrett and he told me they are discontinuing the manufacture of the gt12. This being said the gt12 is awesome but it doesnt spool till around 7000 RPM. I want a turbo that will spool at around 5000 RPM. I am only really moving away from garrett because they are no longer going to make that turbo. I do not want to have a turbo go out with no way to get a new one.

The IHI RHF3 might fit the description of what you're looking for. It should be available as a Daihatsu service part.

The GT12 is fitted to Smart cars. I can't imagine that they will stop making them.

The person from garrett was at competition at MIS. He does turbo testing for garrett. He came and spoke to me quite alot and he told me that they were no longer going to make the gt12. We can spool the turbo but i would like the turbo to spool sooner. I think i might stay with the gt12 and start working on cam changes.

Have you compared it to the GT15V? If Wollongong's success in the past with it is any indication, it's certainly a viable solution. The compressor maps are virtually identical for all intents and purposes... and the turbine map at full open is pretty darn close to the GT12. If you wanted, you could always add a small external wastegate to the GT15V to give you the best of both worlds. Do you have any data on how much mass flow you're actually wastegating with the GT12 currently?

The easiest way to make the turbo spool quicker would be to convert it to a supercharger by mounting the turbine directly to a rotating part of the car such as a gear or wheel

What is your pressure ratio, and corrected air flow for your engine that will have a lot to do with how efficient, spool time and pressure you can run effectively on the turbo

Its good, can you give me your engine parameters.... so that I can proceed further in my project, I am lagging behind because of actual engine data....And also on what basis you have selected that turbo
