Maybe you should look into a side mounted shifter if you are a first year team and you are not comfortable with a paddle shift system.

the way we do it is we have the upshift lever on the right side by itself, and on the left side is the downshift and clutch. The downshift lever has a little arm on it so that when you pull the downshift lever, it pulls in the clutch lever also, but you can pull in the clutch lever without the downshift lever..... anyway, i drew up a rough thing in paint. This is the "blown up" view, so imagine all the parts closer together.

how does this sound i was going to have a tight and short foot clutch and button shifters on the wheel. and i was going to use a linear solenoid actuator to shift the gears.

Just check the specs on your solenoid (response time and current requirements) You may find it better to go with penumatics.
