Well as you can see my avatar is dead because it was linked to my school site and they cancelled it after I graduated.

Can't figure how to change the URL. Added it years ago. Am I stupid?

yeah, i havent been able to figure out how to add an avatar froma URL.

I just made a change to allow the custom avatar's again. It looks like when the forum was upgraded a few months back, some settings were set back to their defaults.

If you look under your profile now and click on "Edit" next to Avatar, there is a button for "Custom Avatar" where you can either enter a URL or upload a pic.
