Simple. Don't use push rods.

Ditto. Overhead cams all the way. Valvetrain compliance is a nasty girl.

Three of us from the FSAE team had Go-ped scooters and, I at least, got quite a bit of riding in. I successfully cracked two Chinese +4mm big bore cylinders before our summer school term ended. Flint's an awesome place to ride due to the police cutbacks and the natives' love for anything which disturbs the peace. The only noise complaints came from the students in KU's dormatory. Go figure...
