Hi,

As a first year team in class 1 we just wanted to clarify something.

As i understand the rules the maximum allowable fuel volume is 7.57litres and you must have a fuel level line to represent this. For the endurance event fuel is filled to the fuel level line and your fuel economy is worked out from what is left at the end of the event?

Yet the rules state that if you use more than 5.72litres of fuel you will gain no points in the fuel economy event so why does the fuel tank have to hold 7.57litres??

we were considering making the fuel tank large enough to only hold the 5.72litres but then would obviously have trouble with the fuel level line at 7.57??

What has everyone's experiences been in the past?

Any clarification much appreciated
cheers

Hi Kate,

it is very easy, it is allowed to you to have a fuel tank size of 7.57 liters. You have to level out where 7.57 liter is. If you use a smaller tank, like many teams do, you have to have a level line which helps the fuel people at the event to mesure you fuel economy. They use this line to fill you up before the enduro and after the enduro again. So they see how much fuel you use.

ok, so we can have a smaller tank with a level line at the correct height of the filler neck, but this level line does not specifically have to indicate 7.57litres??

Another question

Can we have a larger fuel tank (let's say 8l) and the line at 8l? Don't the judges just fill up the tank? If they measure over 5.72L you get 0 points. If thes measure over 7.57 you get a penalty or you are disqualified? What is if they measure you have spent exactly 7.57l of fuel and there is still some fuel in the tank?

I think the 7.57L is important to whether or not you finish the Endurance event. Some teams simply didn't plan on earning Economy points, or didnt have the testing time to ensure those points. So their Endurance run uses more than the Economy allotment. If such a team set their fuel limit at 5.72L, they would loose not only the Economy points but also the Endurance points.

This also suggests that the 7.57L should not exceeded (at least not significantly) as it may lead to an unfair advantage if a car were to finish the Endurance ONLY because it used more than 7.57L of fuel.

Remember, that you only have so much *usable* fuel in the tank i.e. fuel starts sloshing, foaming, etc when you get towards the bottom of the tank. So you definetly need more than 5.72L in order to use 5.72L. 7.57L tank is a good size to be on the conservative side.
