View Full Version : affordable data logger
I recently saw a datalogger with compact flash storage for only a couple of hundred on the web. I thought the link came from here but I can't find it anymore. Does anyone have an idea?

Ok, found it. Should have searched a bit longer.

Igor,
This may be something your interested in. \

This guy makes a FAT file system interface for SD/MMC/CF cards. FAT based files can be easily opened in Windows. for about 50 USD, it sure makes it easy to write data to files that you can open with a card reader on the PC.
This can also be used to collect data from just about any ECU with a serial data output.

Igor,
The Race Technologies DL1 is a great bang for the buck DAQ. I would recommend it to any team who has a tight budget. Although the unit is not weatherproof, the simple wiring connectors keep costs down and let you easily change to differenet sensors without having to make to make new cable connectors.
The software is also great.

Geez! (http://www.extremegeez.com/index.html)
The Geez! system records data to a PDA, and has a little G-Cube accelerometer. Its pretty cheap, and gives good feedback for driver training.

I forgot to mention that Race Technologies also has a new DL2. Same as the DL1 but weatherproof and more channel inputs (but double the price).
Another option for PDA based DAQ units is the MaxQData (http://www.maxqdata.com/). I have not personally used the unit but have seen it used and it exports data to a .csv file type. It also has GPS track mapping/speed, which is a great feature.

I would suggest looking into the AIM Sports Mychron. Depending on what you want out of it you can spend about $350 up to a couple thousand. It will then work as your dash as well. The software works really well and is easy to work with. You can also export the data to read it in excel if need be.
Thanks guys,
I'm helping out a colleague with his suicide machine, also known as funny bike. It's all privately funded and won't be running it in the rain, so I think the DL1 will be the best solution.
Interesting part about these bikes is that they don't lose any acceleration during their pneumatic shifts as the rear wheel doesn't stop spinning http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Wow, what kind of times does he expect to lay down?

I've always said that when I die I want people to describe what happened using the word "careen", as in "...then he careened into the ..."looks like he feels the same way.
He deffinitely has put more planning into it than I have.
Like most people building stuff they think they're going to be the fastest, not unlike FSAE :-)
So I think that would be aiming under 7 seconds, but there is a long way of testing to go.

Off topic a little bit, but I agree Storbeck....I definately want people to wince when they hear how I went out of here. Might as well go out doing something that's putting a big grin on your face, huh?

how many of you guys have ran either the aim sports mychron gold or the mxl peista. we are a first year team and if we can swing the $1800 for the plug and play kits we might use it. i downloaded the software and liked what i saw. i think either data logger would be useful as being a good tool for drivers on the course since it does map tracking and gives repsponses and all of that plus other crucial info. i talked to dave zuvelson(who started the duke university fsae in the 90s) with unfair advantage motorsports in austin ph(210-576-2540), and he said that we could get a discount somehow since we are with fsae.

I have used the Evo3 line of data loggers,2 and 13 channel, and as far as I can tell all of the Aim loggers use the same software and sensors. I would definitely recommend Aim and if I was to sellect a new Aim logger it would probably be the MXL series. The ability to connect with the ECU is a feature I would love to have with our Evo3 as it would make collecting all the data easier.
