Many merge collectors I've seen are bumped up on the input to slide over the primaries and are then held on with springs. How are these for sealing? is there something special done to get them to seal?

The best way to seal two pieces of similar metal is usually to melt them together.

often they don't seal, you make the pipes as snug as you can, and if you are really concerned put some exhaust cement in there.
