View Full Version : Back Up Plans!!!

Here at Melbourne Uni, we diversify our plan of attack by always making sure there are multiple backup plans for all components. A good example would be our engine which I was told was unreliable.

Here is our factory backup which we were going to have no problems with because it was a standard unit.

Now an air cooled unit (Used to have too many cylinders for our liking, we also have a single now):

Some of the factory extras we found lying around the lab:

Here are the Backup Backup optins

what does this prove will?

i'm dissapointed to see this sort of shit aired in public, at least we'd managed to keep the in-fighting and bitching to the overworked internal emails previously at MUR. the glory is in success, not the failure of others.

Relax buddy,

I think it was an attempt to have some fun and bring some humor into a miserable situation.

It is f*%&ing funny though.

Steve, relax buddy. Just trying to give the guys, including myself who are working flat out on the car a laugh. No mallice intended. We left all that behind 3 weeks ago when we decided to put the car together.

We have done the same thing, although it was almost not funny.

We were doing some sound level measurement and the con rod let loose and sent pieces flying about 2 feet above my head.... There was a crowd standing around too so luckily nobody got hurt.

Will - 3 weeks ago you decided to put the car together? What have you been doing for the other 11 months?

Go get a sense of humor. Anyone getting ready for Australia could probably use some right now.

Where did you get this picture? I didnt think they sold this stuff north of the equator. If the picture was taken in Australia how did you get the bottles to stay on the ground on their bottoms. Lookout everyone, the Aussies have solved the Einstein inverse gravity quagmire.

stevep (whoever you are), that comeback isn't funny now and won't be funny in 10 years. Go build an engine http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Back to the topic... How exactly did this 'factory standard' engine lunch itself like it did? What changes were made to it?

Probably suffered from "Pre-competition syndrome" which occurs only within two weeks of competition. It causes normally reliable components to take a giant shit for no reason whatsoever.

Either that or someone accidentally left a live grenade in the crankcase during the rebuild, from the looks of things.

In 2001 we had a simalar problem with our engine in Detroit. I wasn't there, but I guess they spent the whole night changing the engine out to race in endurance only to have the diff fail. Fun stuff this FSAE eh? Don't worry though it only takes three-four years of FSAEto develop a good level of cynisism.

It did run reasonably well when it was closer to factory standard, but this happened when prototype baffles were installed in the sump. Silly me, I thought the baffles were supposed to make it MORE reliable! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Perhaps Steve was just disappointed that there was no pics of the main engine, only the backup. Here you go Steve, feeling more balanced now?

Farls, who ever you are. I might have to take you off the Christmas card list. After doing fsae for 5 years, the most important thing I have learnt to achieve a good result is to build a car early and test, a few kg here or there in the scheme of things doesn't really matter.

Farls, get things right. Now putting the prototype engine into a new car a week before the 2003 event and going testing without water or oil pressure gauges is a recipe for disaster. Here are some pics from the first testing session last year.

Conrods before, plenty of spares, bullet proof
http://img43.exs.cx/img43/4477/PIC00021.jpg

Conrods 1 minute later after driving in circles in our first testing session 2003, 7 days before the 2003 event
http://img127.exs.cx/img127/4716/146-4650_IMG.jpg

Piston pics you posted above are the ones we ran on Sunday, in the first enduro at the 2003 event. They were patched with silastic, (only the best loctite could supply, the high temperature stuff). Second quickest lap, who needed all the extra mass anyway

Farls, at least the Wattard ran in 2003, your backup engine, the FARLARD only ran for 2 minutes before the flywheel came off. The reason for the ER5 failure was we used the baffling you and Soups made, this was our primary mistake. Next time yau attempt to work on an engine, just remember, when you use the uni torque wrench, it actually reads in multiples of ten, so 9 is actaully 90Nm. Just remember this point when torquing up M6 bolts, we wouldn't want you to shear any more.

FARLARD RIP

Farls, maybe you should stick to integration, just remember, no interference fits allowed.

You might want to check your porsche rear number plates, your plates are up for ransom

On a serious note, this is where we were a few days ago.

If any past members or second squad guys have any time, come past the thermo lab or let me know. If Melb Uni can help any other teams leading up to the comp, let me know. Getting a car to the event is an achievement in itself from my past experiences.

The WATTARD looks good this year, no failures in 2004 except for 1 dyno seisure, 1.4 bar boost, zero oil consumption through the GT12 turbo without carbon seals, a car to put it in and test would top off my five year stint in this comp. See you at the comp

agreed. and not to mention, without a backup.

c'mon we know we're good, but it was only 7th fastest (counting only the best lap from each uni too, and only the first heat of the enduro of course).

it only arrived a week before the competition because the team as a whole was so ill prepared. maybe if it arrived 2 weeks before the competition we could have got it to run for 4 minutes.

hey, i helped make them too! but jokes aside, time constraints resulted in us never finishing them. if they were put into the engine in the state we left em last year i'm not suprised the er5 grenaded as it did.

Like Elvis said... "A little less talk, a little more action."

Perhaps spending half an hour posting up a whole bunch of photos and text, and stealing Farls' number plates, could have been put to better use actually building the car?
