A “heads-up” for those of you who are planning to attend the SAE Congress in 10 days time, or who are within driving distance of Detroit.

The 2013 SAE Congress will be held in Cobo Hall, Detroit, from Tuesday, April 16th through Thursday April 18th.

On Wednesday April 17th the SAE’s Motorsports Engineering Activity will have a full day of motor sports related presentations and papers. We will start out at 8.00 am with a Keynote address from Ben Bowlby. Ben will update us on the DeltaWing Project.

Following that, we will have a number of technical papers including a very nice one from Chalmers University on the design process for the aero package on their FSAE car, and three on driver safety research at the NASCAR R & D center.

After lunch at 2.00 pm there will be a panel discussion moderated by John McElroy, a Detroit area auto journalist, on “Does Motor Sports have any Relevance to the Automotive Industry Today? If so, what is it?” The panel members include Pete Spence from TRD, Scot Elkins from IMSA, John Maddox from Roush-Yates Racing Engines and Ben Bowlby.

At 4.00 pm, we will have a networking session called “Chat with the Experts”, where several members of the SAE’s Motorsports Committee, many of whom are FSAE judges, will be present to chat and answer questions about motor sports in general. Among the experts are Dave Finch, the President of Raetech Corp., a 6 time SCCA National Champion in his GT2 Porsche 944, Dr. John Melvin, a leading race car safety researcher, and Ray Leto, the President of TotalSim USA and a race engineer with Truesports and Team Rahal for many years.

We will be in Room M3-32 starting at 8.00 am.
