Yeah, and I've heard that Phoenix International Raceway is trying to secure an FSAE West Competition in Phoenix for 2007. We'll see how that goes... it would be awesome to have you guys all here!
I'll add to the PIR bit since I've been involved with the talks. When Steve Daum was looking for a place in Phoenix a while back, someone recommended Firebird Raceway (where the Bob Bondurant school is). When they were negotiating prices as they did with many facilities in the SW, Firebird was something like double (maybe 4x, I forgot) the cost of most other places. He didn't go to PIR for some reason or another.
Last year PIR and ASU began talks of doing events together to get more exposure. When I was at one of the talks where the PIR were visiting, they mentioned that they would like to hold a race at their facilities. They initially wanted the cars to be NASCAR style, needless to say I shot that idea down in a matter of seconds. But still they wanted to hold a competition there and were willing to donate ALL of their facilites, meaning everything including all of the garages and whatnot, for an event.
It was just talk at first but they recently asked me to get in touch with Steve. He said that the 2006 event was pretty much slated for Cal Speedway but he'll take a look into PIR for future events as they would be donating the space rather than having to rent it out.
So that's what I know of so far.
While we're on the subject of the western event, I would like to ask who is planning on attending the west event and who is planning on the east as their first choice?

I contacted Steve Daum about a month ago. I haven't heard any official updates since then. I have all his cointact info at work, so I'll try to give him a call tomorrow to see if there are any updates.

So we are going to have to worry about 90* days in Fontana in 2006 to 110* days at Arizona. I think there will some serious heat issues.

Instead of worrying about it, design for it. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

There is some truth to the saying "It's a dry heat." 116 is still 116, but Art Fair is coming up in Ann Arbor (home for the summer) and 90 with 90% humidity feels just as bad. Unfortunately the cooling systems don't feel the same way. Oh, and yes there was a little talk about the heat, too, so it's not going unnoticed.

HA HA. If you Stanfurdites have a car by the 2006 competition, I'll be VERY impressed. Why are you wasting time relaxing doing something other than the car, GET BACK TO WORK! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Exactly I was more worried about the cars and designing cooling systems for 116* ambient and like 130* track temperatures. I think most of us would be sleep deprived enough to not notice or care how hot it was. Although I'm sure the endurance would suck alot for the drivers.
PS: Stanfurd get back to work! We need someone compete against for the big race.

Ok, I did miss it, thanks for the info. Also, its not by any means official, but as a kind of head count UT San Antonio is most likely going west in '06, I cant handle anymore 3am drives through Missouri.

I've been talking to a couple profs here at Arizona State who are going to be involved with the event. Seems PIR "might" get a makeover; asphalt rubber surfaces. As far as I'm concerned, traction and tire wear is hella good on these things. Well, at least give me a little more time and I'll let my research come up with more "scientific" claims.
