We were looking in the rules last night and we saw nothing stating where the oil tank can or can't be. We were having some issues fitting it within the side impact structure and we were wondering if it could be outside the frame of the car. Can anyone shed some light on this or point me into the right direction? Any reference to the rules would be nice also.

I wouldn't be too enthusiastic about mounting a container of oil exposed or outside of the frame myself.

I never did understand the rules about mounting things on the side of the car. I have seen numerous teams mount their radiators outside of the side impact structure, but the tech inspector we had in Detroit made us reroute a fuel line that ran outside of the impact structure. Are they trying to keep flammable liquids protected, or liquids that could halt the events if they needed a clean-up.

In 2005, we had a wet sump oil tank, filter, and lines outside of the frame. We had no problems with tech.

You can put it outside the side impact structure, but there has to be a firewall between any flammable liquids and the driver, meaning if its outside the chassis in the rear your fine. Our team has done it several times and there has never been any mention of moving it during tech.

I think the goal of the rules is to prevent flammable liquids from being stored or routed outside the impact structure. Fuel lines have to be inside, but water doesnt. I think that is also part of the reason for the water-only coolant rule- if somebody blows a radiator or takes a rock to their core or whatever, it just spills water (which will evaporate) instead of glycol ( which is a big pain in the ass to clean up)

I believe you can mount it outside the frame. It must be within the "envelope" of your car. If you put a broomstick from the top of your rollhoop to the top of all 4 corners that defines the "envelope".

Thanks guys. Most of everybodies' replies were kind of what we were thinking. We just weren't sure how well some of you all went through tech with that kind of setup.
