.. machine it out of Precision Board. Holy crap. Running it at 4000rpm / 200 ipm with a 3/8 tool. Cuts like butter with a perfect surface finish. No scalloping, no tool load, no nothin. Air blast instead of coolant (or just blow it off now and then).

Wish I had a camcorder with me. Will post up pics of the finished product, but damn.

Gonna probably finish machine this at 300ipm or so. Booya!

what was the density of the Precision Board you used?

I'm not sure what the units on the density are.. but we got a sample of the 20, 30, and 40. Ran this mold out of the 20. Surface is slightly grainy. The design engineer is gonna lay up his part on this, see how it goes. If we need to make another one we'll run it on the 40 most likely. Super smooth.

Wound up finishing at 275ipm. 2mb program straight from the controller.. machine literally could not parse the lines of code fast enough and in a lot of spots it would only feed at 80-ish ipm.

According to www.precisionboard.com (http://www.precisionboard.com) the numbers are in lbs/ft^3.

Very interesting stuff.

tom, how did you get your board? did you have it sponsored? and what part are you working on using that board?

these boards usually cost around 70 to 80 bucks a sheet, so it's really expensive for something on a FSAE car, i would think. I usually use this for something complex like a turbine blade or etc.

Sponsored by an alum who had a couple sheets left over. Small bits. This is for a steering wheel mold.
