I think the air restrictor is a little too big, maybe about 21 or 22 mm :-/

I'm just wondering after we answer this question for you, how many more such vague questions will you come up with.... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Seriously, use the search function. A lot has already been discussed on this subject.

A few teams up here in the great north have been looking into these: Best Engine (http://www.craftsman.com/craftsman-45inch-420cc-dual-stage-snowblower-w-ez/p-07188398000P?vName=Lawn+%26+Garden&cName=Snow+Equipment&sName=Snowblowers&prdNo=12&blockNo=12&blockType=L12)

They come with electric start, competitive 420cc engine, 6-speed gearbox...

These have also proven to be popular in the SAE series. SAE Engine (http://www.briggsandstratton.com/engines-racing/racing-engines/engine/?model=I%2fC)

Geoff,

If this forum had a post count-based level system that appeared on the left with one's username, you easily just earned an upgrade from "4-cylinder monocoque" to "brown go-kart". It might be cool to have a tiered system all the way up to "Lincoln-specific wings".

OP,

Best engine=

First of all, go read the rules, establish a plan of attack and then search all possible options, instead of coming here and just asking like that. You can start by taking a look here:

That post is WAY too constructive and helpful. Help us out here with some ridicule and nonsensical, misleading posts!

Put a small block in it!

Or an LS if you want to get fancy.

There is no replacement for displacement!

That link is the most Canadian thing since maple bacon. Also the most ridiculous. Why would you need 8 speeds on a snowblower!?

That product is 3 things away from perfection: a heated seat, a block heater, and studded tires. I also enjoy the fact that they tell you to check the oil every 5 hours, despite the fact that it's a 4-stroke. Probably got that thing strung out to a bitchin 65hp.

I know that Briggs 305 was suggested as something of a joke, but I think if you drew up the right car around it you could do really well for a small/low budget team.

Use a NorAM clutch, take the governor off, and use a 19mm carburetor. That'll save the weight of a gearbox, a shifter and clutch mechanism, a cooling system, a fuel pump. The low power and fuel consumption will save you a bunch of fuel weight, and you might be able to get away with a fairly small, light muffler and pass sound.

In addition, the driveline will be very light-duty (no bigger than a #35 chain), and you won't have huge chain forces or big adjustment ranges for the chain.

Do a couple quick simulations on OptimumLap or just go to a kart track with a stopwatch. Time the 25-hp TaGs, the 45-hp shifters, and the 8-hp Briggs karts. You'd be surprised how fast a 15-horspower car can go.

Guys lets not get too off topic. Sure those engines could work, but are they BEST ENGINE?

Obviously best engine is engine which has won the most events. Statistically, this is probably the CBR600 (all generations).

I like where your head is at Charles. Why stop at a 305? Why not a Briggs World Formula (aka a Briggs "Model 12" which is 206cc)? Air-cooled, #35 or 219 chain (take your pick... the 219 is lighter), ~14hp out of the box, and comes stock with an electric starter. The Model 12 is lighter and physically smaller, meaning it inherently has a higher power density than the 305 (Model 20) out of the box. The only issue I could see would be charging for a fuel pump, assuming you didn't just leave it carbed. Heck, the stock carb has a 22mm venturi, so the restrictor isn't going to mean anything to this engine! It comes with an air filter, carb, fuel pump, and clutch. At $1000 brand new (or ~$600 to $700 used), add a mount ($75) and a muffler ($75), and you're in business. A complete World Formula package is only 52 pounds [23.6 kg]... I just measured the one in my garage. I personally think it would be an *excellent* option for teams looking to make a big splash while also lowering their resource load.

Having run my TaG (PRD, 27hp) along side some FSAE cars on tighter courses, trust me, they're not far off (I was faster http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif haha).

Feel free to continue flaming the troll.

Uhm, no. Best engine is the one best suited to your needs, so you must first define them and then go on finding possible alternates...

Hey Canadian guys: Any chance of getting a competition sponsored by Canadian Tire up der in da Great White North? Every team starts from scratch inside a Canadian Tire and has a weekend/week to design and build a racecar from parts in the store.

Harry: [/sarcasm]. Starting a sentence with "statistically..." is pre-emptively admitting that your statement is bullshit.

AR: Junkyard wars: FSAE! I like it. Plus there won't be any safety issues, since using parts from Can tire assures that none of the cars will run for more than 5 minutes.

Since fuel economy is becoming more of a factor, I would suggest you move to a really small engine. I would say single cylinder since that is what everyone else is doing. I personally would recommend moving to a really fuel efficient engine such as-

So they are only 3.5cc each....

You could legally put around 171 of them in a car. I would probably go for a W42 configuration. With 2.56hp each that would give a 430Hp engine. Add a turbo and another turbo then a supercharger for good measure and your laughing (all the power!!!). Think of the acceleration times.

I will actually give someone a full $10 000 000 (Zimbabwe dollars) if they actually do this http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

L B0MB

It's a shame they are 2 stroke! At 3.5cc each you could run 174 of them for 445hp @ 34,000rpm (unrestricted). Then add six million turbos and some NAWZ and you'll be laughing!

As long as we allow teams to use ratchet straps as a harness I don't see why this couldn't result in SAE Supra East.
