Our department is now in the process of preparing a much larger room for us than the closet that they tucked us into 2 years ago. We need to present to our advisor and department a wish list. Just to be sure that we dont miss anything, I was hoping to get feedback from those of you that are comfortably setup in your own workshop.

comfortably setup??? we're in a ditch or that's what it seems to be with a bio system soil bin in our shop

Have them clear out a corner of your machining facilities. By the time the fabrication is in full swing, you'll be living in the machine shop, so make sure theres a vending machine and a few cotts/couches available as well. Maybe with a privacy curtain for when your girlfriend wants to see you (unless shes there helping you make parts for the car. Thats a keeper right there http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)

Lots of whiteboards are handy too.

Search for shop equipment. There have been a few posts for new teams and what tools they need in their shop.

You probably would want at least 2 tig welders, a mill, lathe, pipe bender, and assorted hand tools.

Tha'd be nice.
Our "shop" doesn't even have e garage door. Any time the car needs to go out, you either take one side of the suspension off, or amass about 6 guys to stand it on its side and carry it out. Talk about motivation to make a light car.

We did just get a daewoo puma 400LB w/ barfeeder in the machine shop though...

If youve ever needed to change a tire on a weekend or any other time when its hard to get to a shop youll probably agree that these are real nice to have around the shop.

weve got a 8' or 10'(cant remember) garage door but the bright people who designed the building thought that it would be fun to have one of the side walls extend about 15' past the door, so it makes it interesting to say the least to back a truck up to it. but i guess its better than nothing. right now we are trying to get a second tig welding machine. but we do have a mig and a tig so at least two of us can weld at the same time.

our shop is in the basement of the engineering building, meaning the only way to get our car down is in an elevator, minus the a arms and such. Oh ya, we can weld or have any flamibles in it either, that means no WD-40 boys....we have baja, formula, clean snowmobile, and aero stuck in a 20x30' shop with 2 lathes, a drill press air supply and a bench, with a top of the line POS vice. Things are stolen a lot and we are always trippin over other teams stuff.
so is life, we try and make do, but it makes competing with the "big" schools tough, once we bring back the top 50 this year hopefully the professors will give us some respect as we have none right now.
