hey guys, i was introduced to these great little machines at the petit le mans at road atlanta 2 years ago. i want to build one. assuming that i have the facility, welding equipment, and tools, how much do you think it would cost to build a car? i will not have sponsors. maybe i should just go shifter-cart racing? any input will be greatly appreciated.

Somewhere less than 25,000 dollars, in theory. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

"maybe i should just go shifter-cart racing?"

Thats what I would do. Super fast karts and side by side competition. You can spend some of that extra money on spare parts (tie rods, spindles, axles) as you'll be needing them if you are just starting out

my mastermind idea was to get a job at a motorcycle shop and get the parts at cost. looks like shifter carts are in my future. thanks guys

If you are really thrifty, you could make it for under 10000. I would look into a lot of used parts from street cars, motorcycles and atvs. I can tell you that the engine and tires will cost you the most.

You could build one of these cars (or at least, the same idea) for well less than 10k, with NO trouble, if you're capable of fabbing and welding, but you won't have anyone to race. Just buy a kart.
