View Full Version : 2008 chassis complete!
After a grueling 26 hour marathon of grinding and welding galvanized conduit (cough), we have a rolling chassis! The next 8 months will be dedicated to a phenomenal push-bar design.

It was an interesting first drive, as the four wheel steering took some getting used to... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHV-vAbGAC4

nice little chassis.
the galvanised tubing, well, at least all areas apart from the weld wont rust. then put some good rust proof agent on the welds and you have a much more durable steel chassis than most. so you can race forever, till the wheels fall off literally.
good luck for the rest of the car. enjoy the fun. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Looking at those pictures, that main roll hoop looks welded. I don't think that's allowed:
3.3.4.2 Main Hoop
The Main Hoop must be constructed of a single piece of uncut, continuous, closed section steel tubing per Section 3.3.3.
Just thought you should know, anyway maybe I'm wrong...

Those Oklahoma guys better get their frame done ASAP. The pushbar award is on the line!

We should be starting to build our rebar chassis here pretty soon so we're not too far behind you guys.

We used plastic conduit for our last mockup. Might have won us design if the damn duct tape would have held up better to people getting in and out of it...grrrr.....

SHHH!!! you're giving away all the secrets!!
That's what I wanted to do! I'm tired of being involved with the projects that take years off my life (welding galvanized conduit, locking myself in a room to grind chromoly for months on end, etc). Bring on the plastic and hot glue!

plastic tube can get pretty unhealthy too.
when PVC gets hot it releases chlorine gas. that's some pretty nasty stuff too.
but welding is a lot easier with hot glue, it's a lot like MIG.
There are a couple problem areas you will need to address. The main roll hoop tube can't be welded and has minimum bend radii. The upper side impact bar has maximum and minimum height restrictions. You guys should take a good look at the rule book because it will save you a lot of headaches in the long run.

Thanks for the help TG! I think we'll probably just bring several sets of different sized casters with us so that we don't get hung up on any height restrictions in tech.
