I've been looking around a bit and havent been able to find a time faster than Michigan State's winning 3.894 accel time from the recent west competition. Can anyone confirm or deny this. I am purely interested in competition times. Post up the time, team, and event it happened at.

Helsinki did 3.84 at FS Germany 2006.

Well, UWA got a 3.71 at last year's Aus comp, but the staging for that event was ridiculous. They weren't even attempting to line up cars the correct distance from the start line. I know we didn't deserve the time we got either (3.99), it wasn't a particularly good launch.

I'm glad you mentioned the staging was a joke

the staging can have a drastic effect on the time

so to wether the event is optically timed (catches the front of the car) or transponder timed (smart teams placing transonders at the rear of the car)
remember that times are traction limitted and that 90C Tyre temps will reduce times about 0.3sec

adding balast over the rear axle can have similar effects

UQ ran a 13.006 sec (@ 99.96MPH) 1/4 Mile at Willowbank Raceway in 2004 (with traction control ON) http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yeah, one of the things i really liked about the FSAE West comp last year was how anal they were about getting the cars exactly 30 cm back from the start line.

Regarding staging, this thread has some useful info from a simulation I did:

the rules state that the transponder must be forward of the front roll hoop. So smart teams would put the transponder right at the front roll hoop.

The transponder location doesn't matter for accel- the timing is done via optical beams.

WTF, there accel in that Chalmers video looks like its downhill!!!! Did they have a supercharger on that car?

It might have been possible that there was a downhill... and it might have been also possible to do burnouts before the acc... you never know... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Supercharger, no launch control, no quickshift and yes Mikko...you will never know http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Looking forward to the Baltic Open this year?

That Michigan time of 3.894s at west was correct Benjlv

RPI held 2nd at East with a 3.998s accel run
RPI held 8th at West with 4.07s accel run

We did notice that the heat in West hindered our performance somewhat. Our car is tuned in NY so it made for an interesting competition.
