I was wondering if any teams have a CAD model for a Honda CRF450X that we at Kettering will be using for a future car. If you would be willing to share it with us we would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Have you guys thought about pooling some money from different teams and splitting the cost on a 3d scan of the engine?

That is an interesting idea Santorican.
Do you have some links/details on where to get this?
Have you guys talked to Honda?
I called them today and their customer service representative promptly said that all CAD files are proprietary and are not given out.
I was half expecting this answer.
Has anyone ever gotten past customer service through to someone who knows about FSAE in regards to obtaining design details?
Honda also don't sell crate motors either.
All the necessary parts would have to be bought retail.... and assembled. For any team with engine building experience, this is a plausible option, but money-wise, it's a pretty big waste.
Do any of the motorcycle manufacturers sell crate motors that are ready-to-run?

The model I have isn't the greatest, but it should work.
PM me and I can send them your way.

We ended up doing a 3D laser scan, then added the necessary planes, points, and axis for all attachments/connections. This does takes time (hundreds of hours), so if you are looking for an easy route, I suggest reconsidering that motor.
As for sourcing a motor.... One option is to buy a complete bike, strip the motor, and sell the remaining parts. This will save you money over buying all the pieces separately, as long as you can take the time to do it that way.

Don't be intimidated by the CRF/TRX. Realize that these motors are torn down and rebuilt at your local motocross track (brought to you by Lucas Oil and Monster Energy Drink) every weekend. If your team doesn't have engine building experience, the switch to a single makes a great time to start. Just buy the Factory Service Manual and dig in. They're really not that bad.
