For a nice and simple to make paddle shift switch setup take a look at the fromula Renault V6.

Take a plate of aluminum cut out each of your paddle shapes. Joint the two paddles by a thin plate of CrMo. The CrMo plate can bolt between the quick release and the steering wheel. This plate will serve as the hinge for the two paddles.

Use a small rubber vibration mount between the paddle and the steering wheel as the return spring. You can tweek the feel by chaning the isolator size and location.

The switches can be simple push button switches mounted right onto each paddle. These go through each paddle and hit the steering wheel when the paddle is pulled.

Very clean solution, and it will only cost you about $20 in parts, and 2h labour.

Cheers,

Yes, there is a perfectly good set of paddle switches on our 1965 Massey 135 (sport model). Although its competition days are nearly over the switches are like new!!
I could be tempted into selling these switches if the money is right?
