Chromoly tube is only your money if you plan on heat treating it in some way in an appropriate jig (stress relieving, annealing, etc.) Chromoly (4130) vs mild steel (1018,1020) is a debated topic for FSAE, even in the states, where 4130 can often be purchased locally.

Well...I don't know anything about suppliers in Brazil, but we get pretty much all of ours online anyway, so assuming one of these guys would ship to Brazil you would be set.

www.mcmaster.com (http://www.mcmaster.com)

As far as heat treating, we've done it ourselves, and as long as you are very careful about it you can have decent results. The main deal is getting it into the right phase, so you have a relatively large temperature window. Of course doing it this way you'll only be able to get 4130 to 30 HRC hardness, but this has worked good for us for suspension at least.

Also, Carroll Smith had a whole chapter on heat treating in Engineer to Win, I would consider that a must-read. He even talks about the old days when they used color charts to determine temperature.

we have the same problem, Korea not having some of the more desirable alloys readily available, we have to import the pipes, but the downside is that UPS only ships up to 8 feet of pipes...so you will end up throwing a lot of it away and not being able to make your main rool hoop??? guess depends on your design but.

I have yet to see a company advertising that they will both supply the roll hoop tubing and bend it to your spec, so that it could be shipped via UPS. Seems like a really simple thing, too.....

once it is bent though the volume of the thing would probably rack up the shipping cost

If you have them bend a basic flat "U" shape, the shipping box will only be about 2 inches (5 cm) thick and whatever the width of your cockpit is wide. Certainly within the UPS standard package template, and not even subject to any oversize fees.....
