I tried to sign up for registration for west this morning but of course the 10 spots filled up in less then 30 seconds. I had all of our info copy and pasted and ready to go but still wasn't able to make it (for the third year).
I am a little upset with the small amount of spots for both West and East especially West. I am sure there will be at least 10 schools that don't make tech is this accounted for?
Only because i know that someone will bring up VIR. VIR is way too early, school and general build timing will conflict. I think that this is the story with everyone.
I know i am whining.

Yes, attrition leading up to each comp is considered. SAE counts on teams not showing up. In fact, I beleive the attrition rate used to be much higher.
On another note, why did you not sign up for FSAE West to begin with back in October? (I assume your school is signed up for Michigan).
Also, the way I see it, the purpose of the expansion of north american SAE events is not so that one school can compete in more events, but so that all schools can compete in at least one event.

We didn't sign up for West because we already signed up for East.
I agree that the main reason SAE holds West is so that more schools can compete but i still feel that asking to make it to more then one competition is not unreasonable to ask for. I think VIR would be great if it was later in the year.

The great thing about west is that is much closer for schools in the western half of the US. Here in SD it's about a horse apiece to each competition. But I can imagine how hard it would be to get to Michigan from the west coast.
It would have been nice if the third US FSAE event would have been in the middle of the country, say Kansas. That would cut our travel time down significantly.
