Hey all,

Our intake system has separate runners and plenum.

Runners are a 40mm, 2mm wall alloy pipe with a 3mm flange around the end, such that the end of the pipe is flush with the flange. Finish - 400 grit wet/dry paper.

Base of intake plenum - 3mm water-jetted alloy plate. Finish - 400 grit wet/dry paper.

Intake runner trumpets/air horns - Jenvey items, along the lines of these: http://www.jenvey.co.uk/Imgs/Accs/AHc_m.jpg with a bore to exactly match the runner/plenum base and ~3mm flange thickness. Finish - 400 grit wet/dry paper.

Question:

What sealing arrangements do you think are required? The options beign considered at the moment are an uber-thin smear of loctite 574 flange sealant, or a soft gasket of some kind between the parts.

I've used both on production cars, and they work a treat there - but they have 8mm+ thick flanges. The preference would be for the 574, as it'll mean the best interior surface finish on the completed airhorn-plenum-runner joint, but how well does this hold up with such thin flanges?

Any teams willing to share their solutions/experiences?

That'd work very nicely! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Welding the runners to the plenum base rather than to flanges was the other one, but we were keen on no permanent joints on the offchance we've cocked up spectacularly... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif (current setup makes it fairly easy to change the trumpets or the runners)
