Hello guys, my University and me we are starting at FSAE.

I am the responsable of making the chassis but I have got many doubts that maybe for you are very easy to answer and that will help us to arrive to our budgets.

First of all, we donīt know what type of stell do we have to use for the chassis. I have been looking around and I have seen that there are some people that use CDS (Cold Drawn Stell) but i canīt find any prices, or specifiactions...

As you already know we have very few money and we dont know how much it cost. Can you please give me an approximate number? Which type of welding is easier to star with MIG or TIG? or should we use another type of welding??

I will be very happy to get answers to my questions. Thanks a lot!!!

Cold drawn is what you want. You need more than 1% carbon, but don't want high-carbon, so 1018 or 1020 are good. Chassis tubing is one thing we've found is relatively easy to get for free by calling around, but if you had to buy it all you could probably get it all for $500-$600.

As for welding, unless you already have an experienced welder, equipment, etc., MIG would be the cheapest and easiest. A $300 120V MIG welder would be good enough to make a competitive car.

Raulo,

Look at this article I wrote just for teams like yours..

http://www.formulastudent.de/a...ace-frame-chassis/1/ (http://www.formulastudent.de/academy/pats-corner/advice-details/article/pats-column-space-frame-chassis/1/)

Almost ten years ago I wrote this column...

http://www.formulastudent.de/a...rview-for-new-teams/ (http://www.formulastudent.de/academy/pats-corner/advice-details/article/overview-for-new-teams/)

It is a little dated these days but still good advice for new teams.

It is likely there are other articles in Pat's Corner that may be of interest to you.

Cheers

Pat
