Well I am jealous...our university still refers to us as the "go kart club." http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

The lab's equipment includes a lightning-strike generator for simulated lightning strikes up to 100,000 amps; a drop tower for inflicting damage from foreign objects; a pneumatic crash sled capable of crushing full-size vehicle prototypes; and a high-speed video camera that can take 82,000 frames per second. Research focuses on short-term, industry-driven testing of new materials in scenarios such as bird strike, lightning strike or, in this case, crashes.

Now what I want to know...is the lightning generator capable of 12,000 V? Then you would have nearly 1.21 GIGAWATTS! Great Scott!

I think for everyone's peace of mind, we need to know how an FSAE car reacts to a lightning strike.

Results will only be valid with high speed video footage posted online.

lambo and UW prof are giving this huge lecture at ASME congress in November at Orlando. The VP of Lambo is coming down and they are releasing some new Lamborghini.

Yeah that would be annoying. What drove me nuts while I was doing FSAE was that each year we would bust our arse designing an awesome car and when ever the Uni posted a picture about our team or released some promo material it always had a picture of the 2003 car on it. It was an absolute piece of crap by anyones standard!

Ours has also done the exact same thing to us, even to the extent of getting a hold of a really crappy whole car assembly Solidworks model that was falling apart that we did not give them or ever would. Or using a team photo from 2004.

To clear a few things up. This has so far gained no more exposure to the UW Formula SAE team or given the team any benefit. The lab is part of the AA department and so is the professor. Although the team has used the wind tunnel a number of times in its history we have had limited access to the AA labs.

Also like many of you we are sometimes forgotten or misused. The school still uses a picture of our 2004 car (Carbon monocoque that was very stylish), and we get called the F1 team and go-kart most UW news articles.

To be honest the professor has been at the UW for at least 5 years. When I was a freshmen I went and saw him talk about the carbon engine strut for the Murcielago Roaster. We have approached him number of times to talk about carbon structural concepts but the yields have been minimal to none.

No doubt a good thing for the UW and hopefully the team can capitalize on it.
