Anybody knows?

It concerns the balaclava, is wool accepted as a fabric?

I'd recommend going with Nomex.

Off the top of my head I would have to say no on wool (bear in mind the "unofficial" nature of this forum...check the official forum on the official SAE website for official answers from the rules committee).

Nomex balaclavas are cheap compared to the rest of the safety equipment you need, no reason to skimp on them. Also from a pure comfort standpoint, bearing in mind you'll have to wear this under a helmet and firesuit, a wool balaclava (the type I'm picturing being the type typically worn in cold weather) would be both a bit warm, bulky, and itchy.

Best thing to do would probably look for a spec'd one - e.g. SFI 3.3.

Can get 'em for $25 bucks via the internet.
