we are buying a new brake caliper and master cylinder for our existing brake discs, how could we know which kind of caliper and master cylinder is suitable for our brake discs, and could any1 tell us how to calculate the force and pressure acting on the caliper and master cylinder?

thank you very much

I must admit, I've only tried

Girling 0.700 inch m.cyl
AP various 0.825 to 0.65(?)
actually ran both makes on an FSAE car because they worked really well so i was lazy to change the setup http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

As for the models I think Girling only have a few and they look rather old fashioned. But the reservoir is in the body (cast aluminium).

For AP, their website has the drawings and model numbers. Go for short travel m.cyl for brakes (long travel for clutch but you prolly use a clutch cable anyway..). Also, if you wish you can go for the ones with interchangeable threaded pushrods. I seem to remember I used this kind because it worked very well.

Sounds like a gimmick but it's quite good since an FSAE car may have very short pushrods: so you can cut them and if you make mistakes at the end of the day its just a threaded stud! Also it makes it easy to move the pedal away during any kind of mantenance. It's used for Rally apps where m.cyls are sometimes changed (for different setup or if dirt gets in and ruins one)

As for brake calcs, pm me your email address and I'll email you a spreadsheet. Make sure you read a book on brakes before though since it's no use just plugging in numbers and trusting them! Do the work!

Christopher Catto,

I have developed a brake calculation spreadsheet of my own that covers weight transfer etc. I would like to compare it to another spreadsheet. I know your post is from a few years back, but if you could email it to me, that would be awesome.
