Don't do this.

This was a public race where (normally) every competing car needs to have a license to be driven on public roads ... One accident and your insurance says "no we will not pay you any money ..."

The Stuttgart guys told me that they will not do this again for this very reason.

I found that video last year when killing time waiting for a parts delivery and have since made every powertrain person watch it (and most of the rest of the team). Normally followed by something along the lines of "NOW CAN WE BUILD SOMETHING THAT AWESOME!" Its also watched when some cheering up is needed.

I've got to say this is by FAR my favourite FSAE video. That car sounds awesome and looks soooooo fast. I had a great time talking to the Stuttgart guys at FSAE-A last year, they really know what they are doing. From project management down to the cross drilled jacking bar these guys have FSAE sorted.

Cheers

Ladies and gentlemen,
I agree with Tilman and Tobias.

I cringe when I see videos like the one referenced above. It is great fun, but please, please DO NOT enter your FSAE or Formula Student car in hill climbs or other speed events. It will only take one accident and the whole series could be jeopardized. And then the educational opportunity for the next generation of engineers will be lost.

We know that the temptation is there, but even though all of you think that you are the next Rory Byrne, Colin Chapman or Ross Braun, and that your designs are perfect, I am sorry to tell you that you are still apprentice engineers! Your cars break at unexpected times. This is born out by the failure rates during the Endurance events at our competitions.

FSAE cars are designed to run in competitions where the maximum speed is kept to 100-110 kph by course design. And we try to keep the track away from hard objects too. Sometimes the latter is very tough with the facilities we have to work with, but we then have to adjust the courses to suit.

Teams in the USA and Canada that have shaken the bugs out of their cars and want to go a little quicker can enter the autocrosses their local SCCA or CASC club put on. As these courses are designed to take street cars, they are generally a little more open (quicker) than our FSAE courses. BUT they still keep the speeds down and they keep away from barriers, trees, etc.

The safety record for Formula SAE over the past 26-27 years has been very good, not perfect, but entering our cars in hill climbs and like events is asking for trouble. The future of the competition should not be put in jeopardy by the selfish acts of a handful of people.

Been watching this video about once a month for the past 6-8 months. While I'll agree it's dangerous, I've never been more impressed by an fsae video. Except maybe the live feed of stuttgart destroying the endurance track last year at fsg.

Yowza! That certainly doesn't sound like your standard FSAE 600! Is that thing unrestricted in that video?
