View Full Version : Honda Engine Identification
Does anyone out there know how you distinguish between the F4 and F4i engines?
I want to make sure we're not getting ripped off as we're buying an engine without throttle bodies, and I can't see many differences in the 'look' of them in terms of crankcase etc.
Does anyone know howto decode the engine code that is stamped on the block?

The intake port spacings for one. As far as i know this is the only drastic changed (cylinder head) they made between models.
The f4 has equal port spacings, but the f4i has cylinders 2 and 3 (middle two) closer together, i.e. not equal spacing. its only slight.
You generally cant trust the alternator cover and clutch cover colours anymore.
Also you should be able to see a sync sensor on the rocker cover? the f4 wont have one

F4i will have two springs on each intake valve, if they let you take the valve cover off. The most obvious is going to be the black sync sensor that bolts to the head and reads a trigger wheel mounted on the end of a cam.
Thanks guys, that was a big help.
