Hi,
I am new to this whole thing and I have to write an essay on the differentials used in FSAE. I was wondering if someone could give me a list of the ones used so that I could search for information on them. The only one I know of right now is the Torsen. Thank you for your help.

I've got a short list to get you started. I don't know how common each type is in FSAE, and I'm sure the list isn't complete. But there it goes:
Salisbury
Cam & Pawl
Viscous
Torsen (various types)
Quaife
We at Laval use the Torsen (University Special, which is a Type 1 to my knowledge) and I couldn't really provide any details on the other models. Anyway, you will probably learn more by doing the research yourself than by getting all the answers here...
Good luck !
And "open" and "spool" (= no diff).

Thank you for your help. You provided me with what I wanted and now I can research them myself.

Mr. Metallicaman,
Here's a link that may help you in learning a bit about all of the different types of differentials out there. It's by no means complete, but a good start on all of the major types listed here.
