Final Drive Information

My group has been tasked with designing and manufacturing the final Drive unit on our vehicle, I'd very much like to know:

What design considerations need to be taken into account, essentially where do we begin and what do we need to be looking at from the get go?

Also if there are any good books or references anyone knows of that would help us understand the concept better

Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated
