Timing methods

Here at the University of Yellowknife, we're having trouble finding out the right parts for a timing light that we'd like to set up. We figure we'd set up a breakbeam doohickey that our dogsled powered FSAE car would trigger. Anyone have any ideas on the requirements of the photoswitches and a supplier for them?
