hey i helped a team out last year with their turbo car, they originally had an AEM but switched to PE at the competition, i tuned your car on that chassis dyno etc
im wondering if you guys still have the map from the motor off the PE it would help me out a ton if you do
sorry i cant rememeber what school you guys were from competition was pretty hectic

hey, hows that all working out for you guys? yeah their new system is supposed to be pretty sweet. im at LTU now were using the motec im really just trying to remember the ign timing we had on it... or peak ign timing and how much boost we had it running on the dyno
i dont remember much from competition i think i only slept for like 6 hours all week

Blow anymore engines? http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I was standing right next to you at noise when it went pop. What did they look like when you tore them down? Any interesting wear?

haha naw that one definatly popped cause we lost oil pick up (either not enough oil or too many g's in turning)
that was actually the only time i was sleeping all week i missed it

it happened at noise? i dont think so? i wasnt there though

It did happen during noise, or at least that was where we could start to hear the rods knocking. We had the car on the dyno, with that engine for about 12 hours the day before we left for Detroit. Chasing sync errors.
Tear down showed us that the bearings were failing, so we were right to do the engine swap, even though we lost out on dynamic events. We did a complete rebuild of our spare engine, swapped them, and switched the AEM for the PE, with new wiring harness. in a night. (I couldn't have asked for a better team to work with that week) We skipped accel and skidpad to tune, made it out for the autocross, but couldn't get the thing to start at the line. Ran in endurance for 6 laps before some cars in front of us stalled out, and we couldn't restart.
This brings me to my question. We have been chasing sync/starting/blowing up engine problems with the GSXR for 2+ years now. The engines run great off the stock ecu/gas with our oiling setup..(dry and wet sump). so we know that it works. We have used both the AEM and PE, and though the PE runs better at the high RPM's, we still have horrible starting problems (E85?)
What teams are running GSXR's, what have you done with the sensors, what ECU's are you running. The other team running an AEM with a non-honda (Kawasaki) engine, switched out the sensors to use stock honda sensors. Is there anyone out there running a GSXR on E85?
The "Ignition Tuning - Bizarre results" post contains many issues we have seen. Mulitple sparks for no reason, changing the CRIP (or equivalent) changes what spark pattern we see, timing values going the wrong way during a dyno pull, and timing values phasing with injector timing.
All of these issues, over time, seem to lead to us replacing engines... and i'd really like to boil this down to a specific problem. - GSXR sensors, E85...?
Tuning is done with a wideband 02, on a dyno, or parking lot with logging. Fuel pressure and oil pressure have been logged and are constant.
Any Ideas and info would be great.

you probably already know this but run both your sync and ref signals FAR from any other electronics (other side of the car) seperatly AND use sheilding for both... see if your problems go away
thats 90% of all ref/sync problems

Most teams have huge starting problems. I know we do. Probably a combination of electrical drain (cranking speeds and ECU voltage correction), a missing fuel pump check valve, and tuning. I was thinking about whether E85 would make it harder still recently, as we have been thinking about trying it out for the future. Those are some strange problems though. Would the teams running the AEM with non-Honda engine be favoring Honda sensors because that 'generic' AEM box is the Honda -1010 box so some of the sensors might be the proper one for the design? But now you say you are using a Motec, so you should run into that problem I'd hope. Like pengulns mentioned, are you using just some generic piece of wire runing to and from the trigger sensors or something shielded? You should try to get a scope running in parallel with the ecu - hopefully even though the voltages you're dealing with are very small the input impedence of the scope will be high enough not to create its own problems.

We had a lot of trouble with the signal strength during starting so we adjusted the distance between the wheel and the VR sensor and some of the problems went away. Good luck with your Gixxer we've gone to an F4i this year
