Did you see how fast the guy on the right, in the viper crahs, got out of that car!!
A man with a mission, or it happened to him before and he knows what to do?

Holy crap man. That first video-was that car carrying like 200 gallons of gasoline or something?? It just erupted after the tail hits what appears to be a tree.

does anyone know if the guy(s) in the RS200 survived? that was a pretty horrific crash.

Psychosis,
The video you ask about shows the rally crash that ended the career of Swiss Grand Prix driver Marc Surer and cost the life of his navigator. The car was a Ford RS200 and the rally was at Hessen in Germany in the late 1980s (I Not exactly sure, but thats what I remember)
I thought internet etiquette on responsible sites didnt show clips or pix of fatalities. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but thats how I would prefer it.

ive never actaully seen that crash, only heard of it. i know that instantly ended the rs200s rally involvement and ultimately the group B classification. Ford were building a lighter and more powerful version (plain scary). in all honesty i agree that the video is unsuitable for common laughter/dismay and should at least respect those who died. it is very much in bad taste, please edit your post and remove it.

Wow. I dont understand why something of that nature is looked upon with such negative intensity. I had no idea that anyone died in that crash nor does it matter. Nobody is jumping out of their seats and applauding the crash. I am sorry it was classified under a general post that has your kilt in a twist but that wasnt the intent of it. So it is okay to watch a crash and go wow unless someone gets killed? Thats a little off dont you think? The guys in the viper could have got really hurt or killed. But they lived so no need to complain about showing that one. Right?
I think videos of crashs where drivers die should be shown all the time. Racing is sport of choice and has no necessity to even exsist. Attitudes of people lead to things like this: "RACE CAR. RACE CAR. FASTER. FASTER. JORDON ONLY HAS 700HP WHEN FERRARI HAS 800HP. WIN. WIN AT ALL COSTS. OH CRAP. DRIVER DIED. LETS MORN FOR A WEEK AND GET BACK TO RACING. GET BACK TO WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT." Thats the attitude. From what i have read about 4 people died of basilar skull fractures in nascar before dale sr did. Nobody gave a damn. Lets race.
That video shows what happens when a racing series has no care of what happens to their drivers, when companies have no concern of building safe cars, when the fan climate doesnt care as long as whatever it takes to go fast to make them have a good time, when the drivers themselves crawl into a car knowing that they stand a pretty good chance of getting killed but do so because of their own ego.
The deaths in group b rally, formula 1 racing, cart, irl, nascar show that people look at the bottom dollar instead of doing what is necessary to make sure that all people (fans, drivers, pit crew) are safe. Would you watch rally if the car never broke 100mph to make sure that people wouldnt get hurt?
Those guys that died in that car, Aryton Seinna, Dale Sr, and countless other people who have died over the years have died due to the attitudes of the fans, drivers and organizations. All of these race series and fans cry their little eyes out when someone gets hurt and then try to blame it on something when all the professionals out there realized it was only a matter time. Proactive instead of reactionry measures are now starting to become a reality which is great. But unless people see "cool" vidoes of people dying of fireball crashes and carbon fiber a-arms impaling drivers through the face sheild(Aryton), then nothing is going to change.
Leave them up there and learn.

you've made valid points, and yes they serve as lessons to be learnt. its all too often that the drivers safety is put far behind the performance of the car. we're presented with such decitions even at the "relatively" low risk competition we drive at. thankfully crash structures now require proof. we've all seen the 1mm alu box that is an impact attenuator. or carbon bodywork (nose section) that on frontal impact will decapitate a driver. how long before someone gets hurt?
maybe a little warning next time.

Its ok - not everybody in this world is blessed with a sense of decency... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I'm all for parking (hosed-out) hunks of well messed up metal outside high shools/6th form colleges/car shows/motorbike shows as a gentle reminder, but videos of folks' final moments in life are never in good taste. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Even better - I'd compete! http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif (and flick the thing back on its wheels/sledgehammer the headlights to a forwards position/carry on every time it had an off...) http://tinyurl.com/amfe4 http://tinyurl.com/9tutw http://tinyurl.com/a7swk
But then again I'd take Mk2 Escorts, 2-Stroke Saabs and rear-engined Skodas over Evos and Imprezas any day of the week on a smiles per gallon basis, so maybe I'm just odd. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

About how long it takes to remove the handle of a grinder, flick it upside down, rest it on a trestle, wedge the power switch on and start 'adjusting' sharp metal parts against the clock whilst wearing no overalls, gloves or even eyeglasses/facemask - or any number of the other f**king stupid things that were going on in the FS2005 pits.
Impact attenuators or smacking the car into something solid are probably the least of the event's worries TBH.

can't remember where, but i saw that picture as well. i know that crashing into something solid is generally a minor concern (just lots of grass), but theres a difference between building a car thats potentially dangerous and just being a dumbass in the pits http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
should there be a pit safety official? i know it adds more complexity to the event, but just someone with experience to suggest a safer way of doing something if he sees something unsafe. even if you crank your engine out the back of the pits a marshall is there in 5 seconds flat to tell you to stop http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
if i died in a crash, i wouldnt mind people watching it as long as they knew i died beforehand.

Was watching wrc and just found out michael park died. With my perceived safety of a wrc car, it must have been one hell of a crash. It would be interesting to see how it happened so people could learn from the crash. I think wrc is going to do the right thing from the pressure from the teams and drivers. Maybe the cars need to be slowed down for safety reasons (ala formula 1,nascar,irl,etc.)

Rob, Martin and Park slid sideways into a tree at high speed, right on the navigators door. Thats the type of crash they all dread.
Unfortunately, someone sent me a picture of that one too =(
I have serious doubts about what the WRC is up to.
In 1955 at Le Mans, a Mercedes left the road and about 100 people were killed. In some countries motor racing is still recovering from that (along with the televised death of Vukovich at Indy and Ascaris death in testing at Monza...Ascari was a two time World champion with a string of GP wins still to be equalled and Vukovich was the reigning Indy Champ. In Switzerland, for instance, motor racing is banned, only one car at a time competition is permitted since that date.
I fear a WRC car is going to go into the crowd sooner rather than later and the public backlash will be as damaging as Le Mans 1955.
Hopefully, that wont happen.

Just an update on this discussion. So the WRC knew that was the cars soft spot for years. And everyone says "Well what are we supposed to do about it. You cant account for everything." Well it took Parks' death to get everyone moving but if you read the recent Racecar Engineer they have a safety cell planned that might help. Pitiful that it took a dead man to do it but at least they will. Makes you wonder how many other "we know it is coming" are out there in motorsports.
