Anyone know where I could get a precise 3D drawing of the engine?

I'll have access to a 3d scanner soon but if there's a way to get without having to use de scanner I'd be glad!

We use to do it with a Faro Arm but it takes forever.

Thanks

Hey all,
I recently got a copy of the solidworks model from Alex Kwan (Thanks, Alex), as I wanted to see if the model floating around was any better than our frankenstenian version. The one thing we know we have right is the mounting hole locations, and when I mated the model from Alex on our spaceframe, the locations didn't line up. Be careful if you're using the engine as a stressed member and you're getting your locations off of the model that's floating around. I can send out the model we have for comparison if anyone's interested.

I've gone ahead and hosted ours at http://tigerracing.lsu.edu/cbr600f4i.SLDPRT

I can't take a lot of the credit as that is due to Christopher Zellers, but I did tweak the model a little bit. If anyone does use it and finds anything that's out of whack, please let me know. The mounting points and drive gear should be in the correct locations relative to one another. They've lined up pretty well with what I've measured.

Tom: Yeah, I had it all pretty like, but our full assemblies are already getting insane, so I cut down on the number of faces. Sometimes you have to sacrifice beauty for functionality... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

John: I'll convert the file to an IGES. It won't be directly editable, but it will open in 2004 and you can always add stuff to it or subtract from it pretty easily.

Rehosted here... IGS will open in almost any solid modelling prog, the sldprt is SW2005.

We did our test fitment of the engine a little while back and it's pretty close. I'll know how close in a couple days when the engine mounts are and put in place.

Here is another teaser with some preliminary internal components assembled. Please don't PM me, the full assembly will be shared when it's perfect.
From personal experience, it is frustrating to work with an inaccurate/incomplete model.
Approximately 240 hours has been put into this, so after consultation with my team members, those who can show they've made a serious effort will be the first to receive the complete assembly. Of course there are the animations as well, but they too will have to wait until after the FSAE-A competition.

wow, good to know people can make ass's of themselves even from the other side of the planet...

yes, the guy clearly made a mistake by offering the model without consulting the team first, and clearly the choice is not to share (perfectly acceptable), but there is no sense in insulting the people who accept the offer. I mean, i would think someone who isnt "stupid" would just come out and say "sorry guys, we are not sharing the model" I mean... thats the way I would have done it. This thread started off with people trying to get a copy of a shared file of an F4 engine, now it has decended into swinburne's model being showboated as a token" oooo look what we can do?" can we not get it back to the origin or is it now open fayre on other teams showing of what they can do without any inclination of sharing?

muffrx4
12-26-2006, 08:20 PM
As Swinburme team leader I can assure you all who want the model will get it. The Kong is on holidays after a hellish few weeks and will make this top priority in the new year.

Some do believe at Swinburne that such work should not be given away to all and sundry, with the point being that a great deal of CAD skills can be attained by reverse engineering an engine.

With this in mind I hope you all realise that the intent of a dimensionally accurate and good looking CAD model was to improve skills and provide the chassis team with something workable; and was not undertaken as a showoff piece.

We can send you our animated screensaver if thats what you would like.

So trissy the prissy sissy's point is (translated) those who have made a genuine attempt and simply don't have the time to spend will get the model sooner than others who simply post an email address.

Tim, I would say that your previous description sums up our attempts at making an accurate engine model. Currently, our engine model is just the rough shape, very little detail, and less than accurate mounting points. This makes for a tough time designing around the engine, as the largest component mounted inside the chassis. We've tried to use an engine model that we received from Ford, without much luck. We would be very appreciative if we could receive a copy of your model when you decide to send them out. Like I said before, anything you need from us - you got it. Otherwise, I'll ship a couple of cases of delicious, local Lefthand beer out for you guys. Let me know.

We really need a engine CAD, we are a new team, Portugal is a small country and we really don´t have the money right now do buy (even a used) engine.. we don´t need a cad of the interior of the engine, we only need a cad with all the mountings ok, intake and exhaust supports, transmission shaft ok to enter Class 3 competition..

We will be very thankful to who give us a F4i cad...
