Why did the majority teams use Square tube to fix the differential?

Because when you hit it with the flat face of the square tube, you are less likely to put a dent in it due to the greater surface are contact.

Joking aside, I'm assuming you are talking of mounting the differential carrier to the frame? We used rectangular tubing because the mounts we made are flat on the sides, and it slips right in and fits well.
