View Full Version : Side-pod unidentified car
Hi,
while browsing this week's motor news, we came across this orange car:

Anyone know whose car it is? The orange one in the back with the nice sidepods

UC Irvine.
There are a few more pics (with the dreaded foam on the sharp leading edges) under the Competitions > California 2011 thread.
As I understood it's what happens when you let an art school design your bodywork, and they had perhaps the best entrance to competition, arriving on a comically small flat bed trailer being towed by a PT Cruiser.

The orange on in the back? That was one of the University of Californa's. I think UC Irvine maybe? Very nice looking car, I remember it in Cali last year. Insanely quiet however.
EDIT: yep, looks like I was right, but Canuck beat me to the punch. Yes, this is what it looks like when you give art students free reign over top of a design. Does look better than trying to modify an artistic design with engineering (See: Pontiac Aztec)
Thank you! I'll check out the other gallery. Its fun to see other solutions than the standard ones.

Anyone know whose car it is? The orange one in the back with the nice sidepods </div></BLOCKQUOTE>That would be from the University of California-Irvine's 2011 car. It competed at FSAE West 2011. They had art school students design the one-piece body.
Edit: D'oh! This is what happens when you have work come up and fail to refresh before replying. I remember how awesome the PT Cruiser pulling the lawnmower-sized flatbed was now... Thanks Canuck!

They refer to it internally as "the brown car." I think it was students from Art Institute of California - Orange County that did the body for UC Irvine. Talking to the Art Institute advisor, it sounded like they did it old-school by scraping a full size clay (I'm not joking here) and then splashed molds off the clay. The final product was very well done!

Cal State Northridge
Behind it the black car is San Diego State, although I do not remember my team having those wheels when I graduated in 08.
Hey, don't knock on the PT cruiser. We had this really old white trailer pulled by a small truck. My school did have a nice trailer, but they wouldn't let us use it because only the hybrid SUV project that ended years ago could use it.
