View Full Version : 00' gixxer ignition problems

we've been running our 00' gixxer on the dyno for quite a while now, and are using the same PE ecu as in last years car. just recently we started to get crank pickup errors during running which ended up going into complete error while running.
we've tried shielding the sensor wires along with the injector and coil wires with no changes.
we then started removing a component at a time and taking signal readings with an oscilloscope which basically told us we have a good clean signal. as well the error goes away when the engine isn't firing.
when we try to start the engine with everything hooked up it goes back into complete error and runs until some throttle is put into it and then dies.
we're running out of ideas and are looking for some help, if anyone has experienced something even remotely similar to this problem help would be greatly appreciated

Maybe your crank sensor is failing or has moved? We had a cam sensor that would work until it heated up and then it would cut out and the engine would quit. It turned out that the sensor was just on the threshold of how far it could be from the target and it would go out of range upon heating up.

I few ideas... I've never run PE before and know very little about them but our TEC3 can get a little finicky sometimes.

These ideas tend to reduce our faults:

Make sure all your grounds are peferct. Ground you coils to the engine block (not the frame), and if PE is like my TEC 3 it prefers to be grounded right to negative battery post (not the frame).

Are you running indoors? If so, disconnect your alternator and try running the PE from a regulated voltage supply or battery charger and battery setup. It could eliminate possible magnetic feild interference from your alternator or surrounding equipment?

Are your crank position wires really long?... Try to keep them short?

Is there some time you can call to discuss the problem? Let me know and I will set aside some time to troubleshoot wih you. It would be helpful if you were in front of the engine at that point.

I just put in a different pickup wheel and have to re-assemble the engine. That will be done tonight and i'll shoot you an email, as soon as I get any results.

disconnect your speed sensor and see what happens. We have exactly the same problem, but when we disconnect the speed sensor everything goes away and it runs fine.

We changed the pickup wheel and it runs again http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif , the one we had in there previously wasn't centered enough on the pickup sensor.
