View Full Version : DUTch Open 2008
This summer, August 28-30, the Delft team will organise a Baltic Open style formula student event in the Netherlands, the DUTch Open, "the first event below sealevel".
The idea is to have quite some different cars running with a maximum of 22. Therefore we would like to invite the European teams to come over this August to participate. To give a chance to as many teams as possible we limit the teams to bring 2 cars. This can be any FSAE car from the past.
We strive to get the expenses for you guys as low as possible. This will include a place to stay the night (Thursday night-Sunday morning), breakfast on Friday-Sunday, participation in the event and a party with BBQ on Saturday.
The Preliminary schedule will be:

Thursday: Arrival and Scrutineering (workshop open for last minute work)

Friday: Testing day @ event site + scrutineering

Saturday: Event, being acceleration, autocross, endurance, followed by BBQ, award ceremony and party

Sunday: Departure
[/list]
In order to get the costs as low as possible we need all teams to give a small design presentation (10 minutes max) about their car for our sponsors. This event will also be held on Saturday.
Information regarding the event can be acquired via dutchopen@dutracing.nl or the teams website (soon), www.dutracing.nl (http://www.dutracing.nl).
We will use a first come first serve base to allow teams to participate. If we still have slots for more cars we might increase the number of allowed cars per team.

Dear Formula Student friends,
We would like to invite you over for the DUTch Open, The first event below sea level to be held this summer Thursday 28th August, Friday 29th August until Saturday 30th August. On Thursday there will be the scruteneering, on Friday testing on circuit and on Saturday the event. The event will consist out of an autocross, acceleration and an endurance event. Because we are Delft and invite a lot of our Technical sponsors we ask you to prepare a small presentation (10minutes) of your car. You are expected to highlight some specialties of your car and the overall design philosophy for that car. It is like a small Design Presentation. The focus of this event lies in the fun of racing, like the famous Baltic Open. Due to time and location constraints we limit the entrance of each team to a maximum of two cars. This can be any FSAE car from the past until the present year.
A short overview of what you can expect: Entrance to our shop for last minute work, a place to sleep will be arranged, including breakfast. There will be a great party afterwards and of course a lot of burning rubber. We want to promote Formula Student in the Netherlands. And we provide our sponsors with a nice event and give them a chance to meet the people behind formula student. So for those of you willing to do some career planning, this will be an excellent occasion to meet our sponsors, amongst which are some of the largest Dutch international technical companies.
We would like to know if you will come to this great event and enjoy with us the beauty of Formula Student. We strive to get your costs as low as possible. Please let us now if you're interested and if so please inform us with the amount of people you will bring and the cars you would like to take along. From the cars we need year of build, a photo, specifications and what type of fuel (E85 or Petrol)
Hope to hear from you soon!
Kind regards,
On behalf of the Delft University of Technology Formula Student racing team,
TMichaels

Guys,
Is this replacing the baltic Open for this year? If so, I think you better put us down for it. Going to make the track tight and twisty to suit your car or nice and open for us 4pots to clean up http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
JR
Well, last year we kind of said, that we would organise a "Baltic Open" in the Netherlands, so yeah in that perspective you can view this as a replacement. As for the track, it will be a nice mixture of the two, due to the nature of the location. I can yet not go into more details, but we have some nice and spectacular ideas. Oh and yes, there will be a skid-pad as well...

Yeah, BO will be relocated this year.
Which teams have signed up for now?
We have some problems with getting our 07-car to Delft and thought to ask what teams are competing (especially Swedish) and what are those teams' methods of getting the car(s) to The Netherlands.
Our truck has capacity for two cars but since FSG is only few weeks earlier, I think that truck is never coming to Finland in between those two competitions. So, either 07- and 08-car to FSG (will be a tough one to fit with sauna and such on-board) or a seperate transport for 07-car just before DUTch Open. And this latter one could be in co-operation with some Swedish team?

Kimmo, are you in FSUK? I'm sure it will be the last thing on Malins mind. I think we have a trailer big enough to get our two cars in or we are taking the cars down on seperate trailers, so I think we will be pushed for space. Speak to KTH and see if they can help...600odd km closer as well http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I'd say sign us up, however i cannot tell you if we will bring one or two cars. Nor how many people will come. It all depends on what breaks down and who sticks around to fix it after FSUK.
And we've still got a broken driveshaft on ye olde car. Will report with further details after the 14th of July.
We will most likely trailer each car separately if we bring both.

I've chosen FSG to be my annual dose of FSAE/FS, so unfortunately I will not be seen wandering around Silverstone's pit.
If KTH guys are participating, I'm pretty sure they'll have their trailer again 120% full, so I guess we're on our own.
Good to see that "Baltic Open" is braking some new records. Four nationalities already.
Anyone from UK interested? E.g. Oxford Brookes. It would awesome to see a certain Craig D. behind the wheel again and especially win him. Pass the word in FSUK!
HenningO
07-05-2008, 05:17 PM
Kimmo, what do you mean 120% full, as you probably remember, it's possible to stack 2 cars on top of each other, 200% full!
KTH will most likely come with only one car, our financial situation is pretty strained as it is with both FSUK and FSG but I'm pretty sure we will make it.
We haven't really figured anything out when it comes to transportation, closest at hand is obviously putting the car on a trailer and drive down. However if we can find some sort of solution with a truck or similar that can fit both our cars I'd gladly split the costs (and then fly down http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)
Jonnie, you'll be at FSUK right?

Sorry Henning, apparently I'm not that good at math...
We'll have to think for your suggestion. For now it seems that if our truck stays in Mid-Europe, 07-car's transport will be by a van. It's way cheaper in boats/bridges and you don't have to drive 80km/h for 3000km.
Next weekend we'll have a building-up-07car-for-DUTch-Open-weekend. First some work with the car and then to our summer cottage's sauna for strategic meeting. After few bottles of...lemonade, we'll make decisive decisions about the transportation, number of people traveling and how close do we want to let the overall second team come.

Looking good Kevin!
Just to clarify things, here's what we decided in that strategic meeting mentioned above:
-07-car will be transported with van via "Via Baltica".
-07-car team will have 8-10 team members.
-The van will be there on time (hopefully) but the rest of the team won't be there before late friday afternoon. Any idea what time the AutoX will start?
-The overall second team will be about 12 points behind us after all the events.

A quite decimated team of us (Darmstadt) will compete too, although many guys have to do a series of exams. (After a long period of time spent for our cars I found out that there's still an undone job called studying http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif ). Like Michael just said, bring some hot pics and leave some marks!
Small update:
The weather forecast is great. Temperatures between 23 and 27 degrees Celsius, about 10 % chance of rain, moderate winds. Seems like there will be a good amount of people present, we have come up with a challenging and rather varying track lay-out (tight at some spots due to safety constraints, wide open at others, where good cornering instinct is needed. Also the surface is different on the areas, needing constant adaptation from the drivers. Acceleration and skid-pad knock-out will be exciting. We have arranged for some demos and the party promises to be yet another great one!
CU in a few dozen of hours...
cheers!

We had great driving, lot's of team spirit, a great joy and most of all an inspiration that came to mind. I actually sat down some time after the endurance realizing what just happened, and I felt just so happy and satisfied. Just great to see so many of you guys enjoying a great weekend, with a lot of great racing and a very open mind towards one another. I must say we hadn't even imagined such a great event as organisers. It was you guys who made the final touch and I really appreciate the kind words I got on the party about the successful organisation. I hope we can welcome you next time around!
For now I am just awaiting more pictures and more vids. Since I was out there with a green flag in my hand most of the time I did not get to see all that went on. Anyhow, I am looking forward to the next Dutch Open and the next Baltic Open for sure!
Cheers,
Tom

The amount of cars showing up at a small, novice event below sea level was amazing.. Almost 20 cars at the start of the DUTchOpen was far better than the organisation could have imagined a year ago.
Thanks to the "fat Belgian guy", who came up with this good idea (together with TomF?)
The weather was ideal for racing purposes, nice and sunny! The weatherforecasts were talking about "The 3 day summer of 2008". We all known the chances for rain are a lot bigger below sea level http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.
The DUT06 did not do that well, in spite of working hard the week before to get the car in good condition.. A failing cooling system probably wrecked the big-end bearing, because this was the result (mind the clearance..)

Therefore I had to watch the endurance instead of driving it.....

If we invite Yamaha next time, maybe ask them to take some spare parts with them, because it was a very expensive weekend for Powertrain and Electronics...

Frank, I would've never thought of saying this about a party with free beer but indeed there is a way to make the Mahle party better!
Next Baltic Open organiser isn't yet decided but I guess Finland is at the top of that list of nominees. There's nowadays five teams within 400km (last time only two) so that's one good reason for that.
I put the full sized pics to here:
http://hirppa.kuvat.fi/DUTch_Open/
Uploading will take over an hour so hold your horses. The file should be around 436MB when fully uploaded. Because of its pretty large size, I may have to delete it from there after a while.

We were also talking about doing a Baltic Open with races in 3 different countries. We would start in Stockholm for scrutineering and maybe one dynamic event, then hop on the ferry with all cars and trucks and head over to Talinn for another event. The boats leaves at like 6 pm and gets to the destination about 12 hours later, great for sleeping (um, and partying). With a trailer filled with machines we would still have the same possibilities for repairing cars etc. as we would in a normal workshop. After an event in Tallinn we would jump on the boat to Helsinki for the endurance event.
It would be quite the challenge to organize it I guess. But anyways I believe we should put together a "board" of people (from different teams) to organize the competition (wherever it will be held) as it without doubt will be at least the same size as this year. For teams with not as many members as Delft it may be hard to organize such a big event. Thoughts, comments?

Hi Henning,
Sounds like an idea, if you need people to help just give me a call.
Maybe we can start a tour of Formula Student Classics. Let the world know what engineering is.
Still need some sleep after this weekend, can't believe what we did and specially what the other teams did, such some good TEAM work. This is good for the future.

Congratulations to all the teams. Our predecessors said that it was a really well organized event and a lot of fun. So well done guys.
Unfortunately we could not manage to come with the jr08 because of internships of all our team members.
So next year we will try to manage to go to the baltic open. :-)
@Frank:
The Mahle Party just needs some optimization.;-) It is unbelievable great. But at 4 o'clock in the morning it would be nice to see such girls in the vicinity of the Helsinki Sauna!:-)
I would know someone who could do all this stuff during FSG....Maybe you can talk to the redshirts. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Henning, BO-committee isn't such a bad idea. In fact some of our guys have thought about it already several years ago.
I guess it would include only emailing and not physical meetings. Teams could join in after participating Baltic Open (and DUTch Open) for few times.
Baltic Open in three different countries would be awesome. But as we spoke at Zoetermeer, the cost of this competition could rise up to "FSUK"-level. Although, if we could get e.g. Tallink-Silja shipping company as a sponsor for this event, the costs could come down dramatically. Skid-Pad in Stockholm, Acceleration on boat to Tallinn, Sprint at the A. Le Coq Arena in Tallinn and Endurance in Helsinki. After party on a boat back to Stockholm to fulfil the triangle. Then again, would there be any sober drivers to drive in all three cities is another question..
One should work out a drinking schedule for that, Kimmo. Or just let us all do an alcohol test when driving off the boat and only allow those that are sober (enough) to drive perform in the event. Or take a few hours between arriving in the city and the event that takes place there.
What a great event, this was the first time for me I wasn't driving the car (except for the first pic http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)
During autoX and enduro we needed over 30 marshalls to keep the event safe. Every team present contributed without hesitation and they all did a terrific job. Especially building the tracks (haystacks, cones etc.) took a lot of team effort.
We consider ourselves very lucky with our sponsors with their effort in judging and the lovely prizes, the city of Zoetermeer and the police and fire department for their cooperation and of course Silverdome for allowing us to use their terrain.
Another compliment to the teams for preparing their cars so well and especially to the drivers who have never driven their car before this event. They were very safe and professional and we as marshalls never felt in any danger walking around the dynamic area.
Being part of the organization really makes you appreciate what Frank Roske and his team are doing year after year during (and before!!!) the German comp. We had very little sleep, but all the more satisfaction that everything went according to plan.
"All work and no play" doesn't seem to apply to the Dutch Open though. Remember, this is fun!

Hmmm... Probably we are all repeating one another, but it cannot be stressed enough: without you lot, the participants, the DUTch Open could never have been, what is was. You made this possible. So thank you very much indeed! It really has been an awesome weekend. I think I speak for all of the organisation if I say, it was far better than we even dared to imagine http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Great pictures by the way. Maybe FSG should reconsider the uniform for the female staff members http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
But now to serious business. Kevin already posted the results of all the dynamic events, which makes you wonder what has happened to the results of the small design event. I guess my desk must look somewhat similar to that of Frank Roeske. Nevertheless, here they are: Design Results (http://gallery.me.com/julienvancampen/100016/Design%20Results/web.jpg) My appologies they are somewhat belated.

Sorry Julien, but I have to express my deep disappointment about the design event. We asked, but we weren't even allowed to give a presentation on the Puky Chopper! Therefore I want to question the results and demand another chance for the Puky Chopper!

Michael you have 10 minutes to give me the Highlights of your design presentation of the Puky.
Sorry Michael,
Here I must intervene. Since the Puky Chopper is so far ahead of its competition the judges unanimously decided to exempt it from competition to keep the competition fair http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I deeply regret this has not been communicated clearly to you.

Come on guys,
it's not that difficult to differentiate between the University of Applied Sciences Dortmund and the University of Technology Dortmund. The latter competed in DUTch Open & Silverstone 2008, but the UAS has been to Hockenheim in 2008 ...
BTW: FH = UAS ...
UAS: Heavy golden monocoque car with broken electronics
TU: Blue steel frame car with broken frame and steering http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
