Any good sources for DIY muffler materials?

Almost all our muffs have the same basic materials, Glass Packing (basically fiberglass strands), Preforated steel core (available from McMaster Carr), Steel inlet, roll the core and the shell yourself and an aluminum outlet. Should be able to get below 110 dB with a correctly designed straight thru muff.

Didn't think of McMaster for the perf core. That was the only material I was really searching for. I know Summit sells glass repack kits, but each bag is about $20. Should I just use generic FG mat instead?

I have always wanted to build one, but I gota stock suzuki one for brand new from a swap meet for 5 bucks that I have seen a lot of teams running, so we are gona go with that this year

I wouldn't go with a Glass pack kit for a car. the packing is heavier than the stuff you would find at a motorcycle shop. The stuff from mcmaster is perforated sheet. and we then roll it. its easy to roll on a lathe by hand. I would also like to point out my police car in the picture with the three muffs in series. isn't it pretty.

Did you try the intake turned muffler? That would be an interesting test situation for competition. it looks like 8 outlets.

121db it was such a crappy flowing intake we thought it'd be a good muffler. not so..lol

Its also got the shotgun rack and a few other interesting light features. I wouldn't say blues mobile....mission from God yes....but not in a nice way.

But does it have the cop 440, I would think not! Plus even Chyrslers funky old points setup is better then Opti-Fail.

Oh, and when I saw this thread, all I could think was "Crazy Okies", good luck guys, and my vote is for the flowmaster knock off in the first pic.

True. That old interceptor 440 was nice. But the LT1 is a more reliable motor. I have almost 230,000 miles. still runs like a scalded ape down the road. original motor. doesn't burn a drop of oil. and you know the cops didn't take care of it and I promise I beat the crap out of it. And you know, I haven't had any problems with the optispark. The one I have in there is 3 or 4 years old. the trick I think it not going back with the delco. Borg-Warner has better water protection and I can't wait to put the new one MSD came out with, on there. The flowmuff didn't do so well. I did it just for s**ts and giggles.

I think "Crazy Okies" may be a little harsh based on this post, I mean I am not about to deny we are crazy but we have done way crazier stuff than make 11 (new count) mufflers (and one intake turned muff - we are still looking into some parallel combinations :-) ). I mean we have the Super Pogo Stick, The Red Bull Cannon, and don't even get me started on the Swing of Death.

my team for one of our class design competitions (a baseball launcher) built a rediculously over-designed, overpowered pneumatic baseball cannon. coincidentally, a beer can (with coozy) is just slightly larger diameter than a baseball, and you can make paper nosecones to get them really going...imagine a full beer can at 200 yards...yea.

What my Friend Soone_E forgot to mention are pumkin canons and trebuches that our intro classes used to build all the time. that is until we ran out of places that were deserted enough to use safely. We really are nuts. We were using a 2 mile stretch of road near the local airport. but they got scared that we were going to hit the road on the other side. good times...good times.

they have worked for us the past 2 years...
this year, our muffler is from a Ducati
