Exhaust tubing suppliers

I know of several companies that sell mandrel bends, but I am having trouble finding stuff in the size I need for an affordable price. As nice as a stainless header would look, it's a bit out of the price range (three times the cost of mild steel for the size I need). So does anyone know where I can get 1-1/4" (that's right around 32mm, non-U.S. folks) U-bends in mild steel? Like I said, all I've been able to find in 1-1/4" was stainless and it was around $30 per u-bend. I just haven't been able to find that size in mild steel (I've seen more popular sizes around $10 a bend). Also, if anyone knows where I can get a 1-1/4" inlet diameter 4-1 collector, that would be awesome as well. I've got a pretty slick header design that only packages well with 1-1/4" lol.

Tried finding 1-1/4" MS bends but could not...

Edit: I believe they only sell tubing so you will have to go elsewhere for the collector.

We use Cone Engineering collector kits. Much cheaper than buying a $200+ Burns model. With someone who knows how to weld and is a little anal about fit and finish, you can make them look pretty good.

While the subject is on my mind, are there significant downsides to using a formed collector verses a merge collector? For reference:

Obviously the merge collector looks a little fancier, but is the power advantage, if any, worth the price?

A friend said in dyno tests the merge yielded a 1hp gain on his ITC (IIRC) CRX over the formed collector. He went with a formed on on his last header because it was significantly cheaper.

There is a 4-1 as well as 2-1 in case someone wants to try a Tri-Y header design. The 4-1 uses the 1.50" merge bullets that you will have to do a little fabbing to fit.

Wow, thanks for the generous discount of your already great prices! Somehow I either missed that you guys had a 1.25" collector the other day, or you just added it. Whatever the case, I'm 99% sure we'll be getting one from you in stainless. Doing some fabbing on the merge bullets is not a big deal at all. I think we'll be getting the mandrel bends elsewhere though.

They hook us up with a super short collector for our turbo manifold, it worked great last year. One thing to note about Burns is that they give you 2 6" legs on every bend. We have so many 1.5" OD straight 2-4" extra sections I used some to make a table taller. This saves you money if you can make use of some of that straight.

We have a new shipping program for international orders that can go in a flat-rate box for USPS Priority Mail. Instead of the $125-$250 that UPS was charging, it can be as low as $45!

As far as 321 and especially inconel, while from an engineering standpoint it works great, for your application you'll find it hard to justify the cost! In our testing 304 performed fantastic except in applications that had repeated and rapid heat cycling. Notably Indy car type and drift car. We haven't seen a problem in normal turbo applications and have lots of the collectors on NHRA cars in all sportsman classes and also Pro classes that use a collector.

Reflective tape on your firewall works well. We've got a 2 cm gap between our header pipes and firewall/seat back (thin carbon) and some reflective tape more or less eliminated all heat problems.

Have you tried a thermal coating? I put SS headers in my motorhome and the heat increase in the cab was awful! I coated them and it was a great improvement. There is also heat wrap tape for additional protection.

At LTU, we planned on it last year but when the time came we couldn't afford the down time to have the manifold off the car. This year we have ceramic coated our exhaust.

Judges frown on header wrap just for that reason.

We were reaching skin temps around 1200F with bare 304 SS. We now have it ceramic coated and will get some data in the next couple weeks.

Our next manifold is 321 SS (which will also be ceramic coated) with some heat sheilding also.

And yes, talk to Reid @ Reid-Washbon Racing! The only reason we got 321 at decent prices was because he already had a 1.5" OD die setup in his bender...

Have you thought of building a heat shield? You could also add a piece of thermal material to the inside and also look at putting some on the back of the seat.

We built a heat shield which utilized a small section 8"x10" (I think) of aircraft firewall material. It was a carbon carbon matrix material which the company said costs $1000 per square foot. We placed this material in the area of most direct contact with the exhaust but I think it was too small to work effectively.
