If you are familiar with the Detroit diesel, then you will know what I am asking about.

Has any company/anyone tried to make a two stroke gas engine that uses a positive displacement pump (supercharger) rather than crank case pressure and direct injection to produce a cleane burning, high output, low displacement engine? It would be the "Detroit gas engine" for names sake. Almost like a miller cycle two storke hybrid.

I only ask as this idea lept into my head and I need answers or input on the idea.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill, I'm pretty sure I saw an article on an Australian company who had done that. The company is called ORBITAL and is based in Western Australia if I'm not wrong.

Hope that helps

I guess my question would be if they have reduced or eliminated the use of two stroke oil as a lubricating process with the ability for it to enter the cylinder via intake air charge. My idea or engine concept would be like a two stroke diesel.
Supercharged, two stroke like port (enters from side, does not go through crankcase), two exhaust valves, injector and sparkplug. Oil would be just like 4-stroke setup.

Thanks though, as Orbitals webpage is very cool.

Bill,
FYI, a small advanced group at Chrysler under the late Joe Goulart spent over 7 years working on developing a 2 stroke that would be viable as an engine for a small (Neon sized) car. It had a traditonal wet sump, a supercharger and direct injection. It met the weight, output and fuel economy targets, but was put on the shelf because it struggled to meet the upcoming emissions standards. The final press release can be found at:

Thanks Mike,
I just wish that the article had more technicl information on the engine.

Seems reasonable with the advance of direct injection lately.
