hey, this is my first year so please bare with me :P
after reading some pages from these forums, i have picked up a lot of good advice for my sae team but am a bit confused in the transmission dept
we have done a bit of research about the diff transmission types but would like to know what type of transmission does a team in its first attempt use...like should we try make a transaxle, or somehow use pneumatics to make a paddle shifting one or what???

PS: i know stupid questions are disregarded a lot but i guess if i don't be stupid rite now ill never learn

The vast majority of teams use a motorcycle or ATV engine which has the transmission attached to it, and use that stock (or slightly modified) transmission.

I would also go so far as to say that the majority of teams still use a mechanical shift linkage of some kind to actuate the shifter.

It's unusual to use a separate engine / transmission combo unless you make your own transmission case for some other benefit. This is a much more difficult route, but it's been done before.

For a first attempt at building an FSAE car it's always best to use a basically stock bike engine with integrated transmission that you shift with a mechanical linkage. Try to modify as little as possible in the driveline to give yourselves as much time to work out the other parts that you will have to make or customize.

Read these threads at the tops of all the forums here if you haven't done so already:
